Trent Johnson, a custom hatmaker and owner of Greeley Hat Works, sits in his store Wednesday holding the cowboy hat that he is making for President Bush. The custom-designed hat will be presented as a gift from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association to the president for his inauguration. At top, Johnson holds the hat’s silver buckle, which features a solid-gold “W.”

Johnson watched Bush on television to discern his hat type (a cattleman's crown, with a soft cattleman's roll to the brim).

He then spent nearly 20 hours handcrafting a beaver Western hat that the president has worn to several public appearances, including the lighting of the White House Christmas tree. Replicas can be purchased for $3,000 each.
