Best Social Security article ever!
Well, best that I've ever read, at least. Thanks Drum!

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/16/magazine/16SOCIAL.html?adxnnl=1&oref=login&adxnnlx=1105906703-q3vXLPFXujICqd0RcVRZAw&pagewanted=all&position=

It's a bit on the long-ish side - I would guesstimate in the 7500 word area, so that may be a turn off for some. But it's awesome - the history, the straight poop, ahhh....

It's long enough, and wide-ranging enough that giving one lil soundbite quote seems almost useless... But I bow to convention by choosing one. Feel free to give your favorite, if interested!

" Peter Ferrara, a former White House staff member under Reagan and now senior fellow at the Institute for Policy Innovation, who has been proposing Social Security privatization plans since the late 1970's, told me that economics ''was not my primary motivation. It was ideological. We don't want the government controlling that much investment.'' "

If they say the problem with SS is the economics, they're lying, guys.

1. Yup, recycled under "Ownership Society"
Cruised by Andrew Card (ack) on CSpan today, but backed up to listen. BushCo wants to decrease government control, so good hardworking citizens can say, "this is mine, and nobody can take it away".

2. Krugman has been on this since the beginning.
Says the looming shortfall to manifest around 2050 can be easily managed with sound fiscal policy...and a 5 trillion projected defecit thanks to Bush is the biggest threat to SS.
