Bush Rule of Journalism (Robert Parry)
Before even the almighty dollar, the pressitutes of Corporate McPravda must first answer to the Bushes. So instead of actually investigating AWOL Bush, they find some scapegoat to sideshow, CBS and their sources, for example.

Robert Parry understands reasons WHY:

The Bush Rule of Journalism

By Robert Parry
January 17, 2005

“Don’t take on the Bushes” is becoming an unwritten rule in American journalism. Reporters can make mistakes in covering other politicians and suffer little or no consequence, but a false step when doing a critical piece on the Bushes is a career killer.

The latest to learn this hard lesson are four producers at CBS, who demonstrated inadequate care in checking out memos purportedly written by George W. Bush’s commanding officer in the Texas Air National Guard in the early 1970s. For this sloppiness, CBS fired the four, including Mary Mapes who helped break last year’s Abu Ghraib torture scandal.

A painful irony for the CBS producers was that the central points of the memos – that Bush had blown off a required flight physical and was getting favored treatment in the National Guard – were already known, and indeed, were confirmed by the commander’s secretary in a follow-up interview with CBS. But even honest mistakes are firing offenses when the Bushes are involved.

By contrast, journalists understand that they get a free shot at many other politicians who don’t have the protective infrastructure that surrounds the Bush family. Take for example the case of reporters for the New York Times and the Washington Post who misquoted Al Gore about his role in the Love Canal toxic waste clean-up.

'Delusional'

The misquote in late 1999 prompted knee-slapping commentaries across the country calling Gore “delusional” because he supposedly had falsely claimed credit for the Love Canal clean-up by saying “I was the one that started it all.” But Gore actually had said, “that was the one that started it all,” referring to a similar toxic waste case in Toone, Tennessee.

1. So, the CBS thing is the big story, and the WMD isn't making a ripple?

2. Well, we have to remember what's in the national interest.
"National interest" as defined by what's best for the Bush Crime Family.

3. Not only no WMD ripples,
But the missing explosives that were under U. N. seal and could be used to make WMDs, were completely ignored during the invasion. WMDs were the reason * said we went there, but they completely IGNORE explosives that could detonate a nuclear weapon, that the U. N. had confiscated and sealed up at a well known site.

In all fairness though, this is the same Administration that was asleep at the switch on 9/11, but it will never happen on *'s "watch". With Chickenhawks like this allegedly "protecting the American people", who needs enemies?

4. Just had lunch with a Republican...
...Honest to goodness: The guy said he can trust "President Bush," that there is something more "noble" about Bush, that he couldn't trust John Kerry, the flip-flopper and liar.

I let him have it, starting with Bush Sr. and April Glaspie. By the time I got to George Tenet having his hair on fire regarding Osama and John Ashcroft refusing to fly commercial in July 2001 he started to get the point that maybe our media aren't doing a very good job of informing the American people.

It's up to us. And this is why we will win: The Truth is on our side.

8. We will win IF we remain diligent
When you tell or hear a lie often enough, you will soon believe even the most ridiculous tall-tale. The truth is on our side, but I'm afraid the number of people who still care about the truth is dwindling rapidly.

I can't remember who said it or in what context, but someone once said the first objective in taking over a country is to gain control of the media; everything else will take care of itself after that. Ironic that the right has quietly taken control of the media while at the same time bitching and whining about its liberal bias.

Sometimes I wonder if truth can still be heard over all the din of lies and distortions.

6. “Don’t take on the Bushes”
Edited on Tue Jan-18-05 01:31 PM by seemslikeadream
Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s right-wing Washington Times joked that Hatfield “surely thought he would set the world on fire. He just didn’t figure that it was his book that would be the kindling. … One hopes the finality of the furnace puts an end to the story.”

...

Hatfield left behind a suicide note listing alcohol, financial problems and the controversy over Fortunate Son as his reasons for killing himself.

...

For Webb, however, his career remained in ruins. According to family and friends, he grew despondent; his marriage broke up; eventually, he lost a job he had with the California state government; and in December 2004, at the age of 49, he killed himself with his father’s handgun.

...

But what’s clear now – as the U.S. news media has learned to tip-toe around Bush family scandals – is the applicability of that the old adage about the rich: “The Bushes aren’t like the rest of us.”
