Social Security changes opposed by elderly |
|
Read this in the Arkansas Dem/Gazette, a rw paper, yesterday. They had a lengthy article about it, and mentioned that my conman, the only repuke in the AR congressional delegation, had received a ton of mail about this and not one from a person over the age of 65 was in favor of changing SS. They didn't say about those younger, like me, but I suspect that there have been few in favor, especially since I got a letter from said conman assuring me he wouldn't vote to change SS....right now.
This is good, but it doesn't mean we should stop our campaign to educate people about Bush's scheme. I really think this is the issue that we can win.

1. And yet jillions of them voted for gdub....... |
|
.... Tho I want desperately to simply say "fuck em" - there's a small part of morality that won't lemme go that far. But god knows that's what I wanna say (to those many)....
All of which really is beside the point - since nobody - not even gdub (oddly enuff) - is dumb enuff to think publicly about changing SS in a way that affects the *current* voting block... So those old folks will be long dead by the time gdub's changes have a noticable effect - even if they do happen...... sheesh - this is all just sooo stooopid.... fuck em - they deserve what they vote for....

The point of my post is that the very folks who voted Bush are not agreeing with him on SS. To break Bush's power, we have to have issues that will fracture is power base. SS is one of them.

3. Actually, I believe his "base" are people in my age group |
|
People between the ages of 35 and 55. Those people better be opposing Social Security pirate-ization because it's THEM who will not get it. As was pointed out last night MSNBC and by Krugman, when you start taking away funding from SS to let people put money in their private accounts, you take away money from the people retiring today (which, soon will include that group above). SS is a pay-as-you-go system - younger workers pay for those who retire today.
But, these people don't get this - at all. These are the people that need to learn that the $100 they put into SS today goes to pay for someone else's retirement TODAY and they will get $100 from someone else tomorrow. THEN, maybe, they'll understand.

5. Unfortunately those people are blinded by the Bush |

The White House is already talking about cuts to benefits, they talk out of both sides of their mouths. I'm 47 and in that age group that may really be screwed. I have contributed to a 401k since I have been in my 20's but what I have isn't enough to begin to think about retirement. When I was in my 20's I never thought Social Security would be around when it was time for me to collect, but as I got older I began to realize that it probably would be. They say that groups nearing retirement won't see their benefits change but they haven't said what the cut-off is to be close to retirement. Most pundits are mentioning the age 50. Also, they are saying that benefits won't change from current levels, but that means no cola increase. What is $955 a month going to be worth in 20 years? What about the costs to administer the accounts?
If these people have figured out how to make so much money in the stock market why are they working? They should be making a killing now. Unfortunately, young people (in their 20's) often have an unrealistic view of their futures, I know I did.

at age 53. I'm talking this up with folks, starting with the statement, "You realize if Bush has his way, you're not going to get all the SS you've been promised."

The way you topple an empire is to find the issues that fracture the base. You're not going to be able to forcibly evict, imprison, or execute all of those * voters to get them out of the way. You're going to find the cracks, and work them. As they expand, things will start crumbling.
As you find more common issues, more people will unify to get the job done instead of remaining in the polarity that is responsible for our current mess.
How'd I do? Did I get it right, or should I just indulge myself in the blame game and spew vindictive hate at everyone I "blame?"

4. Got a virulent email from the RW email list I belong to. Seems |
|
that the over 65 RW nut cases have figured out that if the Republicans quit spending all their Social Security money on Aid to Dependent Children (translation, Survivors' Benefits) and Welfare (translation, Disability Benefits,) THEIR SS would be okay.
Sounds like someone has been doing some "education" to split the elderly into splinter groups. Welcome to the Generational Wars.
