Not One Damn Dime people- Don't forget
Don't pick up a cup of coffee on the way to work today and bring a sack lunch. And you really should shut off your computer because it's using electricity and that's spending money too.

1. On behalf of the kids...
I will still have to use electricity, so my son doesn't freeze, and, as a single Mom, I'll still have to go to work so I can pay my bills - BUT, I don't plan on buying anything today and I nearly always take a sack lunch and my own coffee!

Gee, today will be like most days! I have no money to purchase much, anyway, thanks to the Shrub economy!

On a serious note, my son's wearing orange today and I'm wearing black. I've also blacked out my website in protest: http://www.geocities.com/scoop1_2

6. Not one dime!
I'm lucky - I don't need to go out today - so, I'm not even going to drive my car.

Nope ~ no coffee, movie rentals or {darned it} on-line shopping.

not today

7. my gf's visiting from Manila, and she has the flu
So I HAVE to get her some cold and flu medicine--I don't want her to keep :puke: for another 4 days plus :-(

But...NO TV today, except when my gf Gerrine is able to sit up straight and blast me in Halo 2

14. Me too, I was up all night with a horrible cough/congestion
so I went to the 24-hour pharmacy at 5:30am to get some cough medicine (I usually use natural healing methods, but this one is really bad.) That's it, though.

However, I am banging in sick today and probably won't go out of my apartment for the rest of the day so I won't be tempted to buy anything.

16. this thing going around is kicking the hell out of people
i was in NYC just before the New Year and upon returning home i had the worst cold/whateverthehellitis i have ever had. ended up in an emergency room with fluctuating fever and raspy cough (thought it was pneumonia)...wasn't the flu...but it was rough...get some rest...it lasted two weeks for me and I still cough from time to time...

17. Thanks! I live in NYC and it seems to be making the rounds
here! It feels like I am coughing up glass, my lungs just feel tattered. Two weeks! Sorry to hear you had such a rough time!

Thanks for the well wishes! :)

8. not to put a damper on this whole thing
but shouldn't it be "not one damn THING" day? I mean, if you consume anything today, then you are just deferring the purchase of replacement to some later date. It will have zero effect if everyone just replaces their consummables within a week or so because they used them today. I am confused as to how not "one damn dime" is supposed to work...I mean, everyone on DU today is support at least a few companies just by logging on and posting...

9. I don't think this makes any sense at all, since the ones you're hurting
are businesses, not politicians unless you are targeting specifically businesses that donate to republicans- and most of us are already refusing to patronize them anyway. The people who will likely feel this the most are the single mom waitress who depends on tips income, or the democratic/apolitical small business owner. Any purchases that you make tomorrow instead of today are not going to impact any company's bottom line anyway. How exactly will this make a political statement?

10. i guess the point is that the whole thing
doesn't make much sense and will have little to no effect. The boycott will affect only small companies (if any, which i doubt) so what is the point? Why are people so jazzed about a gesture that has little hope of being seen???

12. It doesn't;
and, in many cases, only hurts those who depend on tips, etc (like you correctly pointed out) to supplement their meager wages. It makes some people feel good because they mistakenly believe they are making a big political point, but, in the long run, it hurts only those barely scrapping by. It will have zero impact on those corporations who donate to Bush, will not reduce tax revenues that fund the war (since there is no federal sales tax), and is a mere blip on the radar screen to most Americans.

PROTESTING at the IP is another matter, IMHO. I'll be out there!

13. If you really want to speak out against the war today, and can't get to DC
spend it at home writing LTTE's or volunteering in an underfunded social service program, like a domestic violence shelter or a soup kitchen.

Hurting the people who have no political power is not the way to make a difference, it just makes it harder for them to support your cause.

11. This is truly a stupid
and ineffective idea. Go ahead and don't shop today if it makes you personally feel better, but I hope that tomorrow you don't simply waltz back into WalMart as usual.

Better to shop Blue, patronize businesses who support real democracy, not the sham we have now. Get involved in local politics. Run for office. Help out in a homeless shelter.

Merely not spending one day really, really won't make a difference.

was recently laid off(last friday), I'm in survival mode and not spending money anyway. I do, however plan on going to the local Democratic HQ's and donating my time.
Not a bad way to spend Inaguation day:-)
