Men Suffer from Postpartum Depression

"New father Toby Rush says he was thrilled when his son Ethan was born, but weeks later he didn't feel like himself.

"I was scared. I was also somewhat depressed. I just didn't really want to engage. I was starting down a path I didn't want to go," says Toby.

Doctors say Toby suffered from postpartum depression. While it's more common in women, research shows men can experience the same intense anxiety. Anxiety that goes well beyond the expected stress and feeling of responsibility that goes with a new child.

"We are starting to recognize more and more that men can have problems, emotional problems, after the birth of a baby," says Dr. Jonathan Abramowitz of the Mayo Clinic.

2. Ditto. *l* I can understand guys getting depressed a bit but
they just don't have the hormone fluctuations that we gals go through.

3. True.
However, it's not necessarily hormonal issues that are at play, or mostly at play, in terms of full-blown postpartum depression for women, either, though they are a factor in terms of severity and often are THE main etiology for shorter term "baby blues." It's often the stress, the excitement, the anxiety at play in combination with someone who may be genetically predisposed to depression that is the larger part of the etiology. With that in mind, this actually makes some sense. Though, no one is saying this is an excuse for men for, well, for anything whatsoever!

4. For me it was definitel ythe hormones in the first few days.... lack of
sleep is what did me in the rest of the time. That is most likely what is doing in the dads too.

I swear, animal mothers eat their young because they won't let them sleep!

5. Here's the Answer
It's because the men aren't getting any!!! I didn't feel like sex the last two months of pregnancy and I sure didn't want it for at least 6-8 weeks after. You'd be depressed too if you were reduced to solo time in the shower for 4 months!!! And we need scientists to tell us this???

6. If it's that easy to cause depression...
then I'd say we greatly underestimate the rate of depression in the world. The majority of single men must be absolutely feeling downtrodden!

7. A few weeks. That's when the bills start to arrive.
Sleep depravation will make you feel poopy as well. Good news, it clears up in about 18 years. ;-)
