Anyone else see Frontline tonight RE: terrorism in Europe
It was a well done show. They interviewed the people involved in the investigations in Spain, France, and Germany. They played taped conversations. It was fucking freaky. One real mean SOB - who's now being tried for planning the Madrid bombing - was in a tape and he's trying to recruit a young man and he plays the Berg videotape to him. You can here Berg screaming and the guys cheering. And the new guy asks 'Isn't this a sin?' And he was told it's not and that 'this is how they all must end up.' Or something like that.

The show also drove home the point of how Iraq is making everything worse now. It truly has become a training ground for terrorists. And it's only a few drives day from Europe.

It also clearly points out how these Islamic radicals want to restore the old Islamic empire from the 15th century. In fact, they interview some of them who just straight up say as much.

Another thing: France has five million muslims - many of whom live in slums on the outskirts of Paris. There's a lot of extremism being preached in those areas.

It was well done show.

1. yeah

Lots of red meat for everyone.

I'd criticize Ted for this Nightline bit in the sense that it didn't give a sense of the limits of this movement they're looking at. No sense that 99% consider this Omaijjad (?) Restoration party line and most of the rest of the 'ideology' to be pure baloney. No real sense that the numbers involved are remarkably small. No sense of context: that this is the reactionary/fundamentalist Islamic response to Modernity and recent colonialism-- and parallel to the reactionary/fundie Christian bit running wild in the medieval parts of Europe and the U.S.

Good stuff. But he left the Christdolatry/Bibliodolatry fascists a lot of material to yell 'Islamofascism' about too easily.

2. Ofcourse there's a lot of extremism being preached.
They see themselves painted as madmen and insane jihadists in the media and on TV-series every day. It's a selffulfilling profecy.

It's like poking a bull with a spear because it's an agressive animal. No it's not! But it IS if you poke it with a spear.
