The gay-hating is cranking up... ("Traditional Marriage" plates in VA)
Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 09:52 PM by Skip Intro
The pro-hate crowd is in action across the USA .

I found this story while searching for a story I saw on local tv in SC last night. A new SC house-member has proposed a bill to establish minimum sentences for ministers who "marry" gay couples.

I saw that story on tv last night, but cannot find a trace of it on local websites or the net at all. (that could just be my lack of searching skills tho).

In searching for that story, I came upon this:

http://www.dailypress.com/dp-55567sy0jan26,0,6422939.story "> Wedding license plate clears hurdle

---------------------------------

RICHMOND -- A bill to create a "traditional marriage" specialty license plate cleared a House committee Tuesday over objections from gay and lesbian lobbyists and some lawmakers who think it's a bad idea.

...

The bill, sponsored by Del. L. Scott Lingamfelter, R-Prince William, now goes to the full House for consideration. The measure would allow drivers to pay a little more to have their license plate read "traditional marriage," and be adorned with a small emblem of entwined wedding rings.

....

Del. Brian Moran, D-Alexandria, tried to amend the bill so that the specialty license plate would read simply "marriage," instead of "traditional marriage."

He argued that doing so would promote marriage without getting the General Assembly into the position of seeming to use state license plates to disapprove of gay marriage.

His amendment was shot down....

--------------------------

This isn't just happening across the south. Its a concerted, nationwide effort.

Other reports?

1. Oh, what the fuck. I give up even discussing with these sorts of people.
The people that support these sorts of things that I know have also told me they are "proudly homophobic."

2. It seems like the Supreme Court
or maybe it was the specific state's supreme court, I'm not sure.

Anyway, some state wanted anti-abortion license plates, and the court said that the license plates couldn't support a political cause or something.

I'll have to hit Google.

3. Oh, that was SC
there's a thread about that in LBN.

In addtition to that, they (SC wing nuts) want to jail ministers.

That blows me away. The "religious" right locking up ministers.

Just kills me.

5. Let them have their plates. We can crow louder when they get divorced.
Nothing like driving around with marriage plates for a year after your wife has kicked you out and you have to park your marriage mobile in the lot of your dreary divorcee apartment complex.

12. Nobody cares if they're divorced 50 times; it's all about the gay-bashing
This shit is getting out of hand. where will it stop? Are they seriously going to defile the US constitution with this FMA hate ammendment? I think it's official: gays are the new Jews.

6. Mississippi has "Choose Life" license plates, though those
have been declared unconstitutional in other states. So I guess it was inevitable that someone would try for a "traditional marriage" plate somewhere. :eyes: Here in Kansas, there's a gay marriage ban being considered by the legislature. (In Topeka, our least-favorite Kansan Fred Phelps is trying to get a citywide ordinance to prevent the city from protecting people for discrimination for sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.)

AFAIK, there's no talk of marriage plates here, but someone down the street had a "traditional marriage" yard sign out during the '04 campaign. We fantasized about vandalizing it (by painting gender-inappropriate clothes on the little male and female stick figures it depicted), but of course we never did.

9. Traditional marriage....

Does this mean that they support laws against divorce? How about laws against getting married and divorced 8 or 9 times? How about "Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire"? Are they trying to ban the marriages from those types of shows? If they were honest about their intentions, they would have "heterosexual marriage" plates on their cars. Of course, "traditional" is a very versatile word. I'd bet these are some of the same people that would have opposed interracial marriage in the name of "traditional" marriage.

11. Traditional marriage
What do they mean? The kind where the marriage is arranged by the two families? The kind where the bride is purchased from her father? The kind where the husband has complete say in the relationship, and where the woman must be submissive to his demands?

Or, is it perhaps the more modern definition of traditional marriage, the kind that ends in divorce for many fundie couples?

13. If there had been cars in the 1800's
they would have been making license plates that said things like "slavery forever" ..some day license plates that say "traditional marriage", if they come to pass, will be looked upon as relics from a primitive culture.
