What's missing from this story???
Yesterday's New York Post ran a story about the police arrresting people in a rather odious child pornography ring. Included in the Post story is a reference to "Jeffrey Patti, a 36-year-old lawyer" who was one of the people arrested.

For comparison however, let's look at how the Newark Star-Ledger covered the same story:

Defense attorney Jeffrey Patti, 36, of Sparta, who is married with two daughters, ages 2 and 6 months, is well-known in Sussex County, where news of the arrest stunned acquaintances. Patti and his father, Frank, are partners in a Sparta law firm, and he also serves as the municipal chairman of the Sussex County Republican Committee.

Don't you hate it when things get left out by accident?

2. I'll disagree
and say political affiliation is not necessarily relevant when discussing criminal matters like this.

Neither is his race, religion, shoe size or choice of diet beverage.

3. I disagree with your disagreement.
More pedophilia is committed by people claiming to be christians (usually evangelical) than any other identifiable, or self-identified group of people in this country at least.

6. well
considering the overwhelming number of people in this country claim to be christians, I'll wager that most crimes of any sort are committed by people claiming to be christians.

I maintain that a person's political persuasion is really not relevant in a news article discussing their criminal behavior.

10. Research shows that conservative religiosity linked with child abuse
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 11:28 PM by ultraist
A proponderance of research has shown that conservative religiosity is the second best indicator for child abuse, particularly sexual abuse. Consider the worldview of someone who is a conservative religious fantatic. Doesn't it seem that abuse would go hand and hand with this type of person? Makes sense to me. I saw it first hand when I worked at Child Protective Services. The WORST cases of child abuse I saw were parents who were religious zealots. It was standard practice to consider their religious beliefs. These beliefs direct their behaviors.

We can reasonably conclude, that the majority of those who are conservative religious followers are Republican.

Here's one citation:

http://www.menweb.org/throop/abuse/claim-religious.html
From "Sexual Abuse in Christian Homes and Churches", by Carolyn Holderread Heggen, Herald Press, Scotdale, PA, 1993 p. 73:
"A disturbing fact continues to surface in sex abuse research. The first best predictor of abuse is alcohol or drug addiction in the father. But the second best predictor is conservative religiosity, accompanied by parental belief in traditional male-female roles. This means that if you want to know which children are most likely to be sexually abused by their father, the second most significant clue is *whether or not the parents belong to a conservative religious group with traditional role beliefs and rigid sexual attitudes*. (Brown and Bohn, 1989; Finkelhor, 1986; Fortune, 1983; Goldstein et al, 1973; Van Leeuwen, 1990). (emphasis in original)

4. Pedophiles are almost all heterosexual men
and nearly all those heterosexuals are married with children of their own.

No wonder the GOP keeps trying to spread the lie that pedophiles are homosexual. It seems many of them have a lot to hide.

7. It's not his political affiliation. It's his position of responsibility.

8. if he actually held elected office
then it would certainly be relevant. But he's the municipal chairman of the republican committee.

I guess you can stretch to say it's relevant, but I don't see it. If his positions, either professional or volunteer, involved contact with children in any way, then it would certainly be relevant.

9. Another one bites the dust...
GOOD! I hope they keep catching them and removing them from power positions. Jimmy Swaggert, the Catholic priests, Jim Baker, all of the hypocrites who claim to be holier than thou.
