Showtime response to my letter re: DC 9/11 film
I cancelled my Showtime subscription before Sunday and wrote this note of explaination. They've now responded with a generic answer, saying that they are invoking their 'freedom to express ourselves' as cause enough for producing misinformation. I thought I'd share this nice response with all at DU.

PS - I hope, if you have Showtime, you would be willing to do the same.

Showtime's response:

DC 9/11: TIME OF CRISIS is a docudrama based on extensive research, as well as numerous interviews with those who were present during the hours and days that followed the tragedy. It is the freedom to express ourselves that we as Americans enjoy that not only gives you the undeniable right to disagree with the viewpoints in this film, but also enables SHOWTIME to present other opinions that are equally valid and protected.

My letter to Showtime:

I've previewed your new movie, including trailers and press releases. I find the content questionable at best. Also, the director has strong political affiliations, and the script seems to fit his ideal. What will you do if information in your film is incorrect, and we don't find out until later that this is the case? What if significant amounts of important information fall into this category (as I believe they most assuredly do)? Will you issue a retraction? (That would be odd, don't you think?)

In any case, I'm not waiting around to find out. Any company willing to disiminate biased propoganda, as this film most assuredly is, whether it is slanted to the right or the left, without an honest and objective effort to tell the truth, does not deserve my hard earned cash and support.

I signed up for SHOWTIME back when QAF came out, and I did it to support you. Now, I withdraw my support, and I will not even consider subscribing again until 2005.

Good luck.

Jeffrey

1. They are taking the "corporate personhood" approach,
as if it's equal to YOUR opinion, and that sucks.. Does anyone really think that their "right" to express themselves is in any way equal..?? Their "opinion" embeds itself into the brains of millions, and YOUR opinion gets NO airing, NO chance to even be HEARD..

That's what sucks when these corporations take history and "tweak" it to make a buck :(

2. I guess it's their right if they want to be the Premium version of FAUX
And it's our right to protest/boycott.

How do they fit into the "public airwaves" deal? As a premium pay service, are they exempt from any accountability to the public?

I would be really burned if one of the major networks had broadcast this trash.

3. The movie was stupid
I watched about 30 minutes of it yesterday and thought that it was the funniest and dumbest movie about the White House ever made.

7. Bush Refers To Himself At "The President" -
cuz a majority of American's cannot.

Really, I saw just a few minutes and the Bush character keeps calling himself "the president" - what does that say about theJr? Didn't somebody do a psychological profile of Bob Dole about that back in 96?

Of course we already know much about Jr., but this is something new I learned, if Showtime did "extensive research" and it's true. What a weirdo

4. Additionally, their 'opinion' is absorbed by a large audience who
tends to view movies as history books. Why else would 7 of 10 Americans still think that 9/11 and Saddaam have any corelation?

5. My Showtime is free
via DirecTV. I pay only the basics, and I reprogram my cards.
