How do you handle someone in your own family who supports nazis? |
|
My brother, who loves Jesus and bush equally, is impossible to get through to. We can barely speak civily to each other, and we cannot speak about religion or politics AT ALL.
Just like during our civil war, and just like during the reign of the nazis in Germany, families are being split apart.
How do YOU handle it?

No clothes, give them a piece of bread once a week, inject them with chemicals for experimentation purposes, have them sleep in their own urine and excrement and beat the fuck out of them regularly.
Then see if they feel the same. :D

charge that is intent on destroying our country..."chill out"?? Used to have a few uninformed friends who used to say that. They aren't saying it anymore. Start to learn something.

5. Basically, I speak to my brother very rarely. |
|
Our main disagreements were religious and family related, but there is no particular reason that one needs to interact with family members of a certain bent.
Once my wife and I moved and didn't tell her mother our new address or phone number. When we finally did renew the relationship a lot of shit was straightened out.

Politics isn't the problem.
Calling family members Nazis can't be helpful either. You could try loving them enough to give up your judgments about them. It took me 20 years.

8. Not a thing you can do! |
|
if you have kids, make sure they do not ever have to be exposed to the things that they say. If someone loves jesus and bush equally, you do not have a chance to get them to see any fragment of reason, so save yourself....and leave the room...or just stay away. Sometimes you can ask a person to please respect your space by not saying things to you that are morally or socially repugnant to you..but this probably will not be likely to occur in your case. Good luck!

13. Find something that you both agree on. |
|
I'm sure that you all agree that you love your children and want the best for them. Now, ask them how they would feel if the devil wanted their child? Would it be all right with them if the devil dressed like Jesus Christ? Okay, you know where I am going with this. Lead them through it gently. Don't accuse them of being wrong or stupid. What you want to do is open their eyes, not wack them with a liberal two by four.

They aren't fundies, and they aren't Nazi supporters, but they like Shrub. If the subject comes up, it's an all out verbal brawl. That's why we all avoid politics and religion at all costs. My dad however, is on my side as far as religion goes, but that's another story!
You really just have to leave it at the door, I'm afraid.

25. I agree about the 'nazi' thing.... |
|
Bush and his supporters DO act like Nazis and the history of this country's involvement with Nazis.... including the Bush/Walker families is really real.
However, you can not change your family. All you can change is your behavior around them. A little trick I used was to say to myself == well, shit, my ideal family wouldn't act like this, BUT the one I do have does. It was a way to separate my feelings from their behavior.
When you change so they can't press your buttons.... you may be surprised to see how THEY will change.

26. I`m sure your relationship with your brother is troubling. |
|
Trust me. I know what you`re talking about. Maybe instead of beating your head against a brick wall you could just surround yourself with people who care about you and support you.
Do a little soul searching and figure out which is more important: allowing yourself to freely express the spirit of your convictions or squelching it all in hopes of gaining a nod of approval that may never come.
You have every right in the world to be who and what you are. Don`t let anyone take that away from you. Living in a Hallmark family is probably a really swell thing. Problem is, some of will never know. Once you can accept that you`ll be free.

33. With my family, it was more than just politics. |
|
I realized my relationship with them was toxic. Politics was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. I don't associate with them anymore and I feel better now that I'm not being constantly harassed.
Each situation is different, however. If you can agree on some things and the relationship isn't toxic, you might want to salvage it.
I don't think my relationship with my mother or brother is worth salvaging. We agree on nothing, have nothing in common and my mother tries to control everything I do. It was really quite dysfunctional. I made many, many attempts to save the relationship, but it didn't work.
Overall, I'm happier now, though I still get lonely and wish that I could change my family.
I can't change anyone else. I can only change myself and live my life the way I see fit.

47. The older ones in my family are too set in their ways. |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 07:42 PM by Ladyhawk
I can't change them. I can't save them. It's up to them to save themselves. Really, life has been so much less complicated since I stopped feeling responsible for them. I am responsible for myself, for the way I think, for the way I feel.
I also feel a bit responsible for my nephew. I am going to try to convince him to not follow his step brother and step sister into the military. His mind is young enough that I might be able to influence him. Mostly, I want him to think for himself. If he then decides to follow the fundy / extreme right-wing path, then it's his decision.
Since I cut off the toxic family relationships, I really don't feel constant anger anymore. I removed myself from a harmful situation and took responsibility for my own feelings, my own actions. I won't kid you and say it doesn't still hurt, because it does. But it is much less harmful than allowing them to run my life. I'm not constantly bombarded by new hurts.
I don't harbor ill feelings toward my mother and brother and wish them only the best. Yet I remember how they hurt me so that I won't fall into the same trap. Forgiveness doesn't necessarily mean allowing toxic people into your life. We don't choose our families and sometimes, they're just too toxic and we have to move on without them.
On edit: only you know how painful it is to deal with these family members, so if you need to break off relationships don't let anyone tell you you're making a mistake, especially if you've tried and tried and tried and it just isn't working. Of course, it's best to try to salvage the relationship if possible. In my case, it didn't work. I tried my whole life and still couldn't get through. :(

43. Don't speak about politics or religion AT ALL. |
|
Anyone that breaks that rule would be an asshat, in your situation. This would include passive aggressive comments like mentioning "OUR president."
To be honest, I avoid the freepers in my family. Freeperhood (a long descent from mere conservatism) usually involves being generally unpleasant. Therefore, there's much more than politics involved in dislike.
Not every conservative is a Nazi. Those that are don't deserve the energy that it takes to have conflict with them.

There's not much to do, in your case. Except to laugh and be proud. The purpose of provoking you is to either hurt you or degrade you. What a silly (and hateful) person to do that!

BE WILLING TO ACCEPT PEOPLE WHO DON'T SHARE YOUR OPINIONS!!!
Bush is not a Nazi. He's bad, he's even horrible, but not a Nazi. If you can't accept the fact that Bush isn't a Nazi, you can never accept the fact that your brother doesn't support Nazis, and therefore you will never have a friendly relationship with him again.
I have conservative friends. We talk to eachother, hang out together, and crack jokes about eachothers political views. We debate over political issues, but we never yell at eachother or call eachother Hitler or Stalin or whatever. We act like civilized Americans. I enjoy being around them just as much as I enjoy being around my liberal friends.
I understand that your brother may view all liberals as American-hating Communists. You may not be able to change that. However, you can change your view towards conservatives. You may not agree with him - you may not even be able to understand why he would support Bush (I can't understand why anyone would) - but be willing to tolerate him. He is, after all, your brother and a fellow American. If Republicans and Democrats cannot even get along, how can we ever hope for peace in the Middle East?

This is terrible advice. Conservatives are human beings, but mopaul is specifically speaking about an asshat brother that is petty, as well as politically stupid.
Surely not all conservatives are Ann Coulter and diverse views should be tolerated. However, allowing a bully to define what you believe just feeds into their pettiness.

76. I can accept people who don't share my opinions. |
|
What I can't accept are people who allow their opinions to turn them into assholes. Unfortunately, many people who are right-wing or fundamentalist (or both) become a reflection of their own beliefs and treat others quite shabbily. With extreme views, it becomes impossible to compartmentalize your relationships.
Unfortunately, I've finally come to the conclusion that dogmatic religionists can never be trusted with anything but a basic acquaintanceship. So, I don't do fundies anymore. I trusted them one too many times. If you don't belong to their religion, they'll try to convert you. There's always that ulterior motive with fundies. If they can't convert you, they'll turn on you. It is impossible for them to accept you as you are. I'm leery of anyone religious until I learn for sure that their religion is truly liberal, accepting of other religions and even crusty old atheists like me. :)
I will no longer allow fundies into my life, but what you do with your life is your business. I've learned fundies are always harmful to me. Always. Religionists telling me what to do? Ladyhawk don't play that.

there`s something about these rabid rightwingers. What kind of people could snatch someone off the street, throw him on a "ghost plane" and send him off to be tortured?
What kind of people would willingly lie about the reasons for war....knowing full well that men, women and children would die? Who would send men off to an elective war without proper equipment....saying God approves?
Who are these freaks that have a new plan for "burrowing" nuclear weapons? Who insist on citizens signing a loyalty oath before they can attend a gathering where Bush is speaking? Who demand total and complete adherence to the party line? They`re frightening....and dangerous.

72. there are different feelings when one is a mother and not a daughter |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 07:54 PM by Malva Zebrina
children feel free to bash their parents--seldom do I see mothers bashing their children.
There is something about doing the best you can with what you have, with what you came equipped with, with what was the "conventional wisdom" of parenthood at the time, with what you were brought up with when you were a child, and still trying the best you can to give your children better than what you had.
Only to have them discard you or diminish you
That is painful to a parent.
I see too many children bashing their parents or their mother on these boards.
Too bad if you do not get everything you ever wanted from your mother.
Just too bad. I did not either and I doubt that many did.
But I realize that it was different time, a different era, and I realize that, with what she had, my mother did the best she could.
She and my father were only human beings, flawed. like the rest of us. No one is born a professional parent.

Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 09:32 PM by seabeyond
i have two very young sons that are going to adopt this world as they grow up. my father has lived in integrity and honesty all his life, lived that life and taught me this from his example. from a purely party loyalty reason he is supporting bush. not that he can intellectually defend bush and his policies in any way. everything about bush and his policy and his party opposes the very essence of who my father is
no i am not a petulant brat. but if you can easily dismiss me by calling me a name so be it. not only do i take care of my father, i take care of both brothers, right now a niece is living in my home and i am literally taking care of her in all ways. and i do it willingly. as my other brother lives off my father and the state welfare program.
seeing how my mother died 7 years ago also, i have inherited the role of taking care of the males in my family. since none of them have mothers for these children, i have accepted that role also.
to insist i am not going to listen to their really dumb comments about bush's integrity and honesty and the good job he is doing in our country, i dont THINK is too much to ask
do you
you really think i am simply a petulant brat

98. the war has changed all the rules |
|
for me anyway. I used to be diplomatic and avoid political conflicts with family back when that meant tax cuts or public transport, the usual mundane topics of a civil society. It's a new world now. Silence kills. The war has killed 100,000 innocent people who did nothing to us. We illegally invaded another country. 1500 American soldiers dead, thousands more lay half dead at Walter Reed. The dead cannot condemn this war. They cannot hold anyone accountable. But we can, and I do. ANYONE I encounter who supported Bush has to answer for it. Even family. They get angry, they get hostile, it alienates some. I don't care. It's not about politics anymore, or party, or candidates. It's much more. Silence is complicity and I won't be an accomplice to it. It has a price, I have paid it, I don't care. At least I can sleep at night.

If you expose your child to that mental poison, you're no better than they are.
A good friend of mine who gave birth today (YEA!) already has a plan in place for dealing with her fundamentalist, racists in-laws. Her child will NEVER, EVER have an unsupervised visit with them for that reason. Grandpa regularly regurgitates racists clap-trap in front of the other, BIRACIAL grandchildren, and Grandma tells them how Auntie H and Uncle R (my friend and her husband) are going to burn in hell because they don't go to church. (She'd shit her pants if she knew H was pagan and R was an atheist.) To let a child be exposed to that teaches them that it's OK.

I have run into a number of people who see a certain purity in the nazis. It's all about escaping reality. They are in effect the anti-democrat....the ideal democrat being a realist who wants to help society through tedious social work, rather than bizzarre ideological fixes.
Your chances of reaching them is about 1 in a million.

Why does he admire a murderer like Hitler, what does he hate about freedom and equality? What does he think about other people, does he blame a race or group for the crimes of an individual? Does he believe that he is more healthy, self-sufficient, and better than all other humans?
Does he wish to be ruled, or to have a government ruled by the people? Does he believe our taxes should be used to rule the world, or defend and improve life in America?

119. Reminds Me More Of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Pre-WW I Germany |
|
WW I was about securing resources for growing industrial powers.
What we are seeing now are the opening rounds of the great game to secure the last remaining fossil fuel resources for soon to be contracting industrial powers. Look at the China-Iran-India currently alliances being formed.
Seems like 1905 all over again.
. . .
Sir Edward Grey, Britain's foreign secretary, from an article in response to the comments made by Kaiser Wilhelm II in the Daily Telegraph (November, 1908)
"The German Emperor is ageing me; he is like a battleship with steam up and screws going, but with no rudder, and he will run into something some day and cause a catastrophe. He has the strongest army in the world and the Germans don't like being laughed at and are looking for somebody on whom to vent their temper and use their strength. After a big war a nation doesn't want another for a generation or more. Now it is 38 years since Germany had her last war, and she is very strong and very restless, like a person whose boots are too small for him. I don't think there will be war at present, but it will be difficult to keep the peace of Europe for another five years."

...out of ignorance. But after four years of his white house destroying our country and much of the world with fascist policies...there is simply no excusing them any more. How can anyone NOT KNOW what Bush is all about after four years?
I would prefer to use the word fascist instead of nazi...but the similarities between the blind faith and support for Hitler and Bush are too close to be called a coincidence.
