What will happen if Deep Throat is somebody we hate? |
|
rumors are flying - Poppy Bush... Rehnquist....
Since 1974, I have believed Deep Throat engaged in an act of great nobility and honor. But I'm seeing some signs in this thread that if it's someone like Poppy, we're going to re-write history to make Deep Throat into a scoundrel.
Boy, it's gonna be tough if it's someone like Poppy...

|
so, unless its Kissinger (which I don't believe it is), why worry about it?
That said, history is history. Any attempt to rewrite it is reprehensible.

didn't know who it was, if there was such a person. How do you rewrite what wasn't really history?
I want to know what Robert Redford thinks of all this talk.
What a difference between Redford and Woodward.

3. Honestly, Nixon wasn't a bad guy... |
|
He was just supremely paranoid.
It's a shame really, he had good ideas and values.
Compared to this administration, Nixon was a saint.

he was a bad guy. He wasn't a raging right-winger, but to dismiss his evil actions as just "paranoid" is to diminish how truly corrupt he was.
He simply had no respect whatsoever for the rule of law.

I am not a Nixon fan but he couldn't hold a candle to these assholes...
bush has had the equivalent of about 100 Watergates at this point starting with his stock dump in the late 80's and yet he marches on undaunted.
I think we were snookered in the 70's and that there never was a "liberal" media.

29. To me the difference between |
|
W and Nixon is 1) Nixon wasn't totally evil like W. 2) Nixon was majorly paranoid. 3) Nixon had a heart. I saw the Anthony Hopkins movie "Nixon" and each time I see it each time I feel for the guy. Always comparing himself to Kennedy and feeling down that people didn't like him. He tried to connect with those teens at the Lincoln and all that. I actually felt sorry for Nixon. For anyone in the Bush family I could care less about.

Many Pubs will turn on the Bushies completely!
There are still a lot of Pubs who are very pissed off at what happened to Nixon, and they will HATE the person who outed him.
That's a good thing. Turn them against each other!
I personally doubt we will find out who deep throat is on Monday.
I just heard an interview with Woodward & Berstein yesterday with Blitzer. They both reaffirmed that the name would NOT be divulged until the person is dead!

In an interview with Blitzer a few days ago, Woodward kept using the word "he" when referring to Deep Throat. Blitzer said something like "so we can assume that Deep Throat is a man?" and Woodward said "yes, Deep Throat is a man."

But that is not the evidence I would have put together... I would have focused on the Pay of Pigs fully and the Bush placing himself in the CIA years later to his actual work there. He was in charge of the Watergate damage control, but he was not acting out of ethics or out of spite for Nixon. He had a relationship with the very people named to Woody: Hunt, Colson, etc. You might also note that Woody is now one of the Prez's men, so there you have it. I would say he is my first choice, but not for the evidence presented nor for the reasons given. Also, both Woody and Bernie said that they would release the identity of Deep when "he" died. Clearly he is still alive.
The only other people I would even consider would have to be Kissinger or one of the Pay of Pigs CIA people. Deep throat is not someone who had good intentions... to help a journalist follow how a break-in was funded as opposed to the real reason for the break in is not all that honorable. I think he was saving his own ass.

Or if he has to have a hearing for all he's done and out of revenge he spills the truth about all that the Bush family has done. Ah I'd love it. That'd be justice for 2000 and 2004!

18. I know they said it was a man, a smoker, a scotch drinker but |
|
I think it might have been Rosemary Woods. She died recently and the promise was it wouldn't be revealed until the person was dead. Who had more access than she did? I know all accounts say she loved the Nixons, but could she have loved her country more? Even with the gap in the tape taken into consideration, if she knew he was going down and wanted to somewhat soften the history books about him, leaving the level of his involvement in doubt she might just have been walking both sides of the fence. Tell what was going on because she loved her country as well as expose Nixon for what he was doing to "save him from himself".
They could have exaggerated their description of Deep Throat to further grant her cover.
I am waiting with baited breath for the true idenity to be revealed.
As it is now, we are just playing "What's My Line" with all the usual suspects though.
When does the LA Times go to print for their Sunday edition? Didn't Olbermann say it would be Sunday?
And speaking of Olbermann, when he did his teaser about it on his Friday show, he showed Nixon getting into the helicopter. Then they had a clip of the people waving goodbye to him and who was there -- center frame? Rosemary Woods. I think that was a clue from Olbermann since he said he knew who it was.
Can't wait to read the news about this.

20. I have always assumed |
|
It would be someone who deflected from the real reason for the Watergate break-in, so I always assumed it would be someone I would dislike/hate greatly. I have never found it convincing that Nixon resigned over a break-in or that such top officials would be directly involved in something as small as a wire-tap. I thought it would be the following, in order of those I feel the most probable:
1). Bush Sr. 2). Kissinger 3). CIA (Higher Up (Bay of Pigs person) 4). Bush Sr. (because it would make more sense than anything else)

28. There are no clearly marked heroes or villains in this world, Dookus. |
|
I have never struggled to believe that even the worst members of humanity are still capable of doing great and honorable things, or that fundamentally good people are prone to committing evil acts.
In fact, I relish that aspect of human psychology, although the former obviously pleases me far more than the latter. It makes people more exciting, more unpredictable. The characters and circumstances depicted in the Iliad are a brilliant literary example of this complexity.

33. I've always presumed DT was farther right than Nixon. |
|
I've always assumed that RW'ers who weren't happy with Nixon not going far enough (destroying labor and environment) undermined him so that they could get some super-corporate friendly Republicans in control of the party.
Corporattions were losing power and the middle class was getting stronger even during the Nixon administration. It wasn't until Nixon was gone that corporations really turned America into something very different from what it had been for the previous 30 years.
