Social Security Overhaul is Long-Standing Conservative Dream
http://www.commondreams.org/cgi-bin/print.cgi?file=/headlines05/0205-05.htm

<snip>
WASHINGTON - The argument for dramatic change in Social Security is clear:

The promise of secure retirements is a "hoax." Taxes paid by workers are "wasted" by the government rather than prudently invested. And "the so-called reserve fund ... is no reserve at all" because it contains nothing but government IOUs.

President Bush? No, Republican presidential candidate Alf Landon and his party's platform in 1936.

Bush's proposal to overhaul Social Security wasn't born with the new forecasts of looming financial problems. It's the product of a conservative dream to undo the system that's as old as the program itself.

1. Wow.
When are the MSM going to start reporting this little nugget? Seems like a pretty revealing comparison to show that it's all the same "booga, booga, the sky is falling" scare tactic that has been tried before!

2. It's also why the conservatives
aren't all that upset with the huge deficits. If it were a dem with such deficits they would be out there screaming about fiscal irresponsibility but they know the goal, they know the true reason for these deficits.

3. "Overhaul" is not the word. It's "destruction" they're after.
These are sick, sick people filled with rage over the idea that we can function as a society, caring for each other in times of need. We are dealing with horrible, damaged, demented people who hate the simple notions of decency and community that make a progressive society work. They're insane, in a very real and profound way, and the sooner we recognize this fact, the better.
