Country Music hypocrisy. Super Bowl
I mean Gretchen Wilson's song ..'Here for the Party'

Is talking about sex most likely out of marriage considering she looking to 'get her some' at a party.

I know these bible freaks love country music but their lyrics are not much better than some rock songs.

In the words of Mike Malloy.

'Did I tell you how much tonight how much I hate these people!"

The rest of these no-talent bums can go back to pumping gas or whatever.

Edited to show my intense admiration for the one and only Johnny Cash.

19. Nanci Griffith and Willie Nelson, and Buddy Miller are liberal too.

In fact Buddy did a gospel album as kind of a protest against Bush

" But that's not the only reason Miller finally felt compelled to make music out of the Christianity Julie induced her Jewish boyfriend to embrace in the early '80s. The other was "the way Jesus has been hijacked by the Bush administration."

5. Don't be fooled
Gretchen Wilson (and the Dixie Chicks) are about as "country" as the Sorbonne and winters in St. Moritz.

The real country performers don't go anywhere near lyrics like the ones you cited, nor do they get tangled up in politics. I have no idea where my favorite country performers are politically, although I do know that one - Dale Watson - is quite liberal, but then, he lives in Austin.

So, don't worry. Country is real, and those people - Gretchen Wilson, et al. - are just bad pop singers.

the increase in suicides and the rise of the fundie, right wing nutts. Coincidence???

I like the Dixie Chicks, but the rest of it sucks. "Crying in my bear cause I feel sorry for myself" music or "we'll kick your ass cause we're merikuns and white" music, take your pick -- it sucks.

Edited to Note: Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Sr., Johnny Cash, true country and some damn fine music. May they rest in peace!

'til she came out with that weird song recently about how "we need to sacrifice our sons for this country and god, just like god sacrificed his son jesus for us". Bizarre. I think she lost her mind.

14. Not true.
Country music's popularity has been going down the tubes for some time now. That is, main-stream "commercial" country as played on ClearChannel stations. The Nashville Establishment has never given a fuck about good music--just trying to make something that sold. They can't even do that right. The "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack was a giant hit--featuring old-timey country music. And Nashville keeps pushing hat acts & teenyboppers in sequins.

If you hate "crying in my beer cause I feel sorry for myself" tunes, you've never actually listened to Hank Williams.

11. Gretchen Wilson's not country in my book.
Pop music with a fiddle in the background is modern country music - doesn't cut it for me. Hell, Yellowcard has a fiddle, too - does that make them country? Nooot quite.

Er, sorry. Just had to rant a bit.

13. Faux country music
My friend at work recently told me how much she loves country music -but she can't stand steel guitar or fiddle. I tried to educate her on what county music is, but she's hopelessly confused.

21. You mean country music no longer has steel guitars and fiddles?
I, obviously, don't listen to new country, but I thought steel guitars and fiddles were staples in country music. Hell, I'm a Tennessean, for God's sake - home of the Country Music Capital of the World.

So, what does it sound like, now? Freeper rock?

32. Gotta have the fiddle..
and the steel guitar, and the Fender Telecaster! :D

When I'm in a country mood, I'll go for Merle Haggard. Don't know where he is politically, but you just gotta love lyrics like "and I turned 21 in prison doin' life without parole...no one could steer me right but mama tried..." or "I've got swinging doors, a jukebox, and a barstool..." :)

Classic. Absolutely classic. :D

27. Charlie Daniels
I used to like Charlie, that is until I got a listen to his latest pro-'murican, anti-Arab anthem "It's A Flag Not A Rag And We Don't Wear It On Our Heads..." (or whatever it's called).

Daniels likes to make a big show in public of what a "Christian" he is but then writes a completely UN-Christian, bigoted piece of crap like that. I wanted to ask him why he didn't include a verse or two about the niggers, kikes and queers for good measure!

Someone needs to remind this ignorant redneck that we are ALL children of God and bear His Image-- WITHOUT EXCEPTION!

You can't love God while hating your brother.

(Please forgive the use of the racial epithets- my intention wasn't to offend but to make the point that it really isn't much of a stretch from one to the other.)

28. Here's a good antidote.
Check out:

www.jamesmcmurtry.com

and download his new song "We Can't Make It Here Anymore" free.

It's kind of "alt-country" and surely in the spirit of Dylan and Woody Guthrie, IMHO.

31. Real country music.
I'm from NYC so country music was not a normal part of my environment. My first exposure was Tex Ritter. Somewhere down the line, I got to really like Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.

Along the way got to hear Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, George Jones, Willy, Patsy, Dolly, Emmy Lou, Merle, even Slim Whitman. Anything with Buddy Emmons!

Defining real country music is like defining real music. Y'all should listen to some John Cage.

33. If you're from NYC...
..then there is a great country (well, sorta country) band based in your hometown--the Hangdogs.

http://www.hangdogs.com

I caught their new tune "Wallace '48" about the progressive populist presidential candidate Henry Wallace on the XM radio the other day.

It was fantastic, both musically and lyrically.

But I wouldn't call them "traditional country".... :D
