Could "Deep Throat" be a lady?

COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Rose Mary Woods, the devoted secretary of President Richard Nixon who said she inadvertently erased part of a crucial Watergate tape, has died. She was 87.

Woods died Saturday night at a nursing home in Alliance, Ohio. The cause of death was not immediately released.

The 18½-minute gap in the tape of a June 20, 1972, conversation between Nixon and Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman was critical to the question of what Nixon knew about the break-in at Democratic headquarters in the Watergate complex three days earlier -- and when he knew it.

Woods, who moved to northeastern Ohio after leaving Nixon's staff in 1976, never talked much about her years with the only U.S. president to resign.

Hmmmm, that would be quite an interesting twist. ;)

3. Actually, I don't think it's her because of the characature we've been
given, but it's worth some fun to consider ALL the possibilities.

11. Again, Deep Throat is a 'composite' or 'literary device'
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 07:59 PM by EVDebs
to put information on record without acknowledging source. You can get fired for that today. Bob Harris' article Deep Throat

www.metroactive.com/papers/ sonoma/07.03.97/scoop-9727.html

should have you asking questions about Woodward and Sen. Robert F. Bennett, however. But we know the media won't be asking, now, don't we !

""What's missing is an understanding of Deep Throat, Woodward's garage-lurking source who guided the reporters to some of their biggest leads. If he was just a concerned citizen, great. But if Deep Throat had his own agenda, then he used the Washington Post to shape the story for his own purposes and got away clean.

"I have told Woodward everything I know about the Watergate case, except the Mullen Company's tie to the CIA."--Robert F. Bennett, testifying before House Special Committee on Intelligence, July 2, 1974.

Robert Bennett was the head of Robert R. Mullen and Co., a CIA front headquartered in the very same building as the CIA's Domestic Operations Division. The Mullen Co. did legitimate PR work; it also did PR for other CIA fronts and provided cover abroad for CIA operations. Bennett's most notable employee was Howard Hunt, a former chief of covert actions for the Domestic Operations Division of the CIA.""

13. They've already said it's not a composite.
I think it was in 2002 they said this - the article you give is from 1997.

17. Read the Metro article by Bob Harris. Also the Probe article at
http://www.webcom.com/ctka/pr196-deep.html "The Deceptions of All the President's Men"

Don't you want to ask Senator Robert F. Bennett why he didn't tell Woodward about the Mullen & Co. ties to the agency ? Could be because he didn't need to...

2. possibly, but if we're thinking about a distaff Deep Throat
I'd also put a side bet on Lucianne Goldberg; she was around at the time, and she's a muckraker above all else.

I can only hope that she's on her death bed.

12. of the few clues that were released
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 08:09 PM by dweller
by woodward, or bernstein, or the editor? (forgot his name) was one that it was a man, and his name to be released upon his death.

so, i'd say unless it's some kind of trick to keep everyone off base, i'd say no.

dp

edit: http://www.smithsonianmag.si.edu/smithsonian/issues03/dec03/presence.html
"Woodward and Bernstein have both said they will not reveal
their secret source’s name until the individual dies, although
Woodward did disclose that Deep Throat was a living male.
Likewise, Ben Bradlee, executive editor of the Washington
Post during the Watergate era, has said he knows Deep
Throat’s identity but won’t divulge it. About 75 archival boxes,
containing more than 250 notebooks, assorted files, galleys for
the book All the President’s Men, and photographs, which the
University of Texas bought for $5 million this past April, will be
available to the public in the fall of 2004. But documents
referring to Deep Throat and other confidential sources will be
kept sealed in an undisclosed location until the sources’ deaths."

also note 2 interesting points in above quote: UT owns the archival evidence, some in 'undisclosed location' (unka dick's bunker?) and the last line ... "sources' deaths" ... too many plurals there for clarity. How many sources, or how many deaths??

15. They also said "he" was a heavy scotch drinker/cigar smoker
so I doubt it was this 84 year old secretary.

But man I'm dyin' to find out! ;)
