Consumer Reports: Mac Laptops Have Fewest Repairs
Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iBook and PowerBook portables have the fewest reports of repairs and the best technical support of any laptop PC on the market today, according to the March issue of Consumer Reports magazine.

Using data similar to that released last December in its desktop ratings report, the Consumers Union (CU) said Apple had the fewest repairs of laptops, at 16 percent. Toshiba and Sony were second and third, at 17 percent. Gateway had the worst laptop repair ranking among more than 57,000 CU members, at 23 percent.

A similar survey of 69,000 desktop users gave Apple the best repair history at just 13 percent.

Tech Support

As for technical support for laptops, Apple got a readers score of 84, making it the highest of any PC manufacturer. It received a "better" ranking in problem solving by phone technical support, the shortest time waiting on the phone, knowledgeable phone staff and Web-based support. In second was IBM with a score of 69.

2. Good to know.
I love my 17' iMac.

I loved my previous iMac

and my 5500 PowerPC before that

And my Mac IIci before that.

It's a great product, and worth a few extra bucks.

3. But...but...Apple's going out of business any day now!
LOL! I've been hearing this since the eighties. I got my first Mac II -- the first color desktop -- in 1987. I have seven in the house now, although only four are hooked up an functioning. One of those is basically a build-your-own (GASP went the PC people). Out of the seven Macs I have (doesn't include the one I sold and the one I gave Mom), the number of hours spent at the repair shop is just unbelievable...

None.

Zip.

Nada.

Never sent a Mac in for repair. No, never a house call, either. Nothing. Plug 'em in, use 'em until I can afford a new one, then move them down the food chain.

4. For 21 years I have used my Apples and Macs
and had no problems whatsoever.

In my home cellar I run an eMac (800 MHz), iMac (350 MHz) 2 Performa 6400 (180 MHz) and my 1992 PowerBook 170 and all of them function with past and present software.

Most of all I uae mainly OpenSource software which is free!!

5. Just bought an iBook G4...
It has more for the bucks than the Dell or Toshiba at the same price, I couldn't touch a Thinkpad for it. I love mine.

9. make sure you buy it from mac, i rec'd a damaged one from a reseller
(neww) and i had the option of getting it fixed only . if you had seen the box that was delivered to me it looked like someone took a hammer to it. i didn't see that until i signed for it. they should have taken it back.
it never closed properly and had port problems that ended it's life prematurely.
