AP: Canadian Wal-Mart Seeking Union to Close
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 07:34 PM by abernste
By ADAM GELLER, AP Business Writer

NEW YORK - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Wednesday it will close a Canadian store whose workers are on the verge of becoming the first ever to win a union contract from the world's biggest retailer.

Wal-Mart said it was shuttering the store in Jonquiere, Quebec, in response to unreasonable demands from union negotiators, that would make it impossible for the store to sustain its business. The United Food & Commercial Workers Canada last week asked Quebec labor officials to appoint a mediator, saying that negotiations had reached an impasse.

As if we need another reason to hate Wal-Mart.

5. Walmart is a joke
There's a reason everything is so cheap. Unorganized labor and horrific trade practices and minimum wage employees, many on welfare.

The government subsidizes Wal-mart. Yay.

6. This might actually be a good strategy for people who oppose having
a Wal-Mart move into their town. Talk loudly about organizing a union among the employees that will have to be hired. That just might discourage Wal-Mart from moving into town.

7. CTV, a Canadian news outlet, is reporting unions are...
going to call for a nation-wide boycott of Walmarts in Canada. Go unions!! I have already been boycotting Walmart for a year and, living in a small city, it takes a little more planning and work to find what I need, sometimes even driving to another city 40 minutes away but it is worth it.
