Imminent war with Syria & Iran... |
|
is anyone else out there just trying to figure out how they are going to make this happen. I am so afraid of another "terrorist attack", which leads to another "war". Please, if someone else out there is counting the moments until they can string together a reason to invade Iran, let me know. I need to know I am not paranoid.

I wish we could stop it. I have not felt afraid all this time, but I feel the only way for them to go to war with Iran/Syria, have mass support and be able to institute a draft, is an attack. An attack that is worse than 9/11, and which is "framed" with a clear perpetrator.

Well, most days.
A war with/against Iran and Syria is a foregone conclusion. There's nothing that I know of that will stop it -- certainly no one in CONGRESS has the balls to try to stop it. Most of them are buying into, validating and even promoting the underlying premises, whatever they are.
I see no way out of what's coming. All I see is train barrelling down the tracks straight at me...and you...and everyone I care about and plenty of people I don't, and millions of people I've never met.
Sorry to be so gloomy.

Things are just coming together too soon too fast for there to be any other conclusion. The U.S. picking a fight with Syria will do a lot toward drawing Iran into a war. So many scenarios as to how this could play out, and they're all bad.

4. I was sick to my stomach this morning |
|
when I read the report about Goss and Mueller going to the Senate Intelligence Committee and finally admitting that Iraq was (is) a failure. Not in so many words, but still, they are finally admitting that it has made the world unstable and has increased the extremism and they will use the mess that they've made there as a reason to go to war w/ Syria and/or Iran. It just isn't going to stop. I had to fight back tears just thinking about the imminent destruction that will continue to be waged by the U.S. govt. and I can't stand the thought that my tax dollars are going to support this.

then launch surgical strikes against Iran once there are US troops occupying the buffer between Iran and Lebannon. They'll effectively kill three birds with one stone: rid Syria of a 'bad' regime, cut off the arms supply route from Iran to Syria which will weaken Hezbollah (thus enabling Israel to invade) and position more US troops within striking distance of Iran, which will make them very nervous.

How can Americans tolerate this? We didn't sign up for this! The President's Iraq polls are at all-time lows. No one appreciates his overseas-war debacles. If he does this to two other countries, I just can't imagine that everyone would sit by and justify this.

9. I share your concern... |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 06:58 PM by TwoSparkles
I am behind on the news because I've been busy with my kids today.
However, the little that I have read today left me with a very grave impression. It seems like we're going after BOTH Iran and Syria.
In the past weeks, we've been firing up the hate/propaganda machine on Iran. Now, we're starting in on Syria. Accusing them of the assassination of the former-Lebanese leader is such balderdash. How in the hell do we know who did it? Our snap judgment made me wonder, "Gee, did we assassinate this person, just so we could quickly blame Syria? What's going on?".
There's no doubt that the neocon psychos are waging a propaganda campaign against both countries.
I don't know WHAT they are doing, or how they plan to execute it.
Also--I am concerned about a terrorist attack as well. There was an article today about a government official (can't remember the source right now, sorry!) warning us of "imminent" attacks involving nuclear, chem or bio weapons. I hate it when they throw out these fearmongering statements. It forces me to wonder if they aren't covering their butts, so when something does happen, they can look like they were organized and informed when they forewarned us.
It's just awful having to think like this.
Bastards.

I've been thinking the same thing today. Then point the finger at Syria, ratchet up the rhetoric and boom, in another month or two, we're going in.
I'm worried too. We are putting our LA home up on the market this week and I'm sitting here thinking if we should drop our list price just so it will sell faster so we can get the hell out of here sooner. We're heading up to Montana, nearly on the border of Canada.....My husband has had a bad feeling for a few months about a supposed "terrorist attack" here in southern CA, possibly on the Long Beach port.

12. I thought we'd be in Iran or Syria BEFORE the election... |
|
The case has been building for a long time. The only thing that makes me leary that there's going to be a war in Iran is that Halliburton and GE still have a lot of business going on there.
Syria on the other hand seems to have be in the line of rhetorical fire about their support of Hamas.
Now I'm thinking that there will probably be no war with either of those nations even if there are domestic terrorist attacks. Why? Because that would divert funding from Rummy's pet missile defense program he has going on in Alaska.
All in all, with Bush's perceived God-appointed mandates I would think that he wouldn't need to make a case to go to war other than "That nation harbors terrorist."

I think many of us are now afraid of which city (cities) are next on the "chopping block!" This mis-administration cannot get more people in the military without an "incident." Look at the sign-up rates after 9-11!!! They will do what they can do to avoid a "draft" so it will have to be a voluntary draft, i.e. a patriotic duty because the country is under attack by the heathen hordes again! We are in some serious trouble here!

He used to e-mail me regularly, and now nothing..:(
He should have never gone back there, but he felt compelled to go..He was born in Baghdad, came here after Saddam came to power, and was "drafted" by the USArmy to go back and "help".. He's been very ill at times, and the last I heard from him, he was going "outside the green zone"...out of uniform to "mingle" with the Iraqis.. Since he is a native, he might be ok, but it scares me.. 55+ yr old rich guys have NO business in a warzone..
He's got a Quixotic streak through him a mile wide.. the extra irony.. after they sold everything here, and he went there, he settled is wife in Beirut, since it was "safe".
His daughter is in college in Montreal..

26. You forgot Russia (ha ha) |
|
I agree.
Members of this administration have wanted an all out Big War in the Middle East for over a decade. They lied their way into Iraq -- and so far, they've gotten away with it, and they know they can get away with more.
I think they have been trying to instigate something by the Iranians or Syrians -- to give them an excuse to widen their war a la PNAC.
I don't think many people appreciate that by "pre-emptively" attacking Iraq, the Bush administration has worn out our Ace card for the last 50 years -- the threat of attack if conditions are not met. The message in the "post Sept 11" world is -- we're going to attack you no matter what. So -- where's the incentive to cooperate anymore? Instead, people will react defensively and patriotically, saying tat if the US is going to attack us no matter what, we may as well be armed so we can kill as many American soldiers as possible.
This is horrifying.
On top of the news our of Lebanon (assassination with "ties to Syria) and Syria and Iran allying themselves against the common enemies -- we saw Porter Goss not only saying that not only are terrorists poised to strike us, but raised the spectre of missing Russian munitions, again. Mind you these munitions have been missing since the first Bush adminstration (Bush I did nothing to secure them, even after being presciently warned by former President Nixon that WMDs falling into the hands of stateless terrorists was the nature of warfare post Cold War) -- but the administration will craft a faux case that somehow Russia is deliberately leaking out materials to terrorists to counter the US and Israel.
One of the ultimate goals of the NeoCons is to marginalize Russia; by creating an alignment of Russia with anti-America terrorism, they are perhaps creating a case to widen the war to involve the Russians as well.
I say, Syria by the end of the year.
I also say, Russia is going to be increasingly implicated as a new kind of threat to the US.
This is an extremely troubling development. I think the Bush adminstration has gone from plans for a widespread regional war in the MidEast to establish Israel as the dominant power, to taking on even broader ambitions, i.e. establishing American dominance over Russia.
They WANT a world war. They have been drooling over one for years. Some of them have been calling for one for decades.
I think this will begin to evolve fairly rapidly from this point. I predict a draft by the end of the year, and attack of Syria by early next year.

36. I've said it before... |

... and I'll say it again. The US will rue the day it picks a fight with Iran. Iran will not take it sitting down and they have a superior, well equipped and well trained military.
They probably have the support of certain other large countries who will supply them.
We won't be able to just do the air-bombing trick either, they have effective anti-aircraft defenses.
I know there are idiots (who need not be named) in our government who think this is a good idea but I have to assume that at least some of the leaders in the military know it isn't. Hopefully, some of them have some power.

A draft? It would take 12 months at least for enough troops to be ready to fight Syria and Iran.
