Did you know that Jimmy Carter had a submarine
named after him? I didn't know until I watched the Canadian news station. They also reported that the Department of Homeland Security has mismanaged millions (or was it billions?) of dollars in funds leaving many seaports unprotected because many of the decisions were fueled by business rather than security.

Now why couldn't our domestic news report these things? Would it mean an informed public?

1. I also know he was on a nuclear submarine and, unfortunately,
pronounced nuclear as Shrub does. I think it's a Southernism, although, since I live in the back yard of the Secret City, I have always pronounced it correctly.
(In fact, took the son to visit Oak Ridge today. He wanted to learn about "energy." Oh, he's 5 years old, btw. :) )

10. Is that the reason that * mispronounces it? I always wondered.
And kudos to you for taking your little one to learn about energy. It's never too early to teach them about what's going on in this world.:-)

12. Truman too
CSPAN radio this afternoon was airing a Truman press conference where the main topic was France joining the 'nucular' club.

2. Actually, I did hear about it on the news.
I can't remember how long ago it was, though.

3. Most nuclear weaponry of any submarine now. Ironic, isn't it?
The nuclear sub story was on NPR today as it was launched or some such today.

6. That's the term I couldn't think of, geriatric moment, thanks.
and before anyone gets upset and calls me an "ageist", I am a crotchey 50 yr old who is starting to experience these moments or being unable to recall a word or something and a friend gave me this good term to use. Call me uppity, but not ageist.

9. It is the most advanced nuclear sub we've built, not...
the one with the most nuclear weapons, although it might possibly be able to be made that way with a retrofit of warheads to cruise missiles. That wouldn't approach the number of warheads a Trident system is capable of delivering.

This boat is the last of the Seawolf class. I was surprised it was named for a person.

I for one am happy that President Carter was honored this way, it is fitting. I haven't been following the fleet in the last 10 years or so.

5. Did you know that makes something like 28 NewKiller Subs...
And Russia has only 1 or 2 they still use? And every other country in the world that have Subs, only has local (Coastal defense) Subs.

Kinda makes ya wonder if we are wasting money at the DoD.

8. The c-span coverage was neat to watch, maybe it'll replay later.
Ret. Admiral Stansfield Turner, Carter's CIA director, introduced Carter at the ceremony with a nice little speech, and when Carter spoke, he thanked fellow Navy guy Turner for his service, saying that throughout his term, Turner's CIA always provided intel that was accurate and never at all confusing. (Bwaahahaha!)
