3. Wishful Thinking on their part.
Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 03:29 PM by spanone
It is just now showing up in MSM. Give it time.

Is that why Wolf Blitzer didn't mention it today, instead doing an hour on the NBA all-star game that no one could care less about.

Howard Kurtz did a piece on it today.

26. MSM keeps calling 'gannon' an ESCORT, when he is a PIMP/PROSTITUTE

Many people have NO IDEA what an 'ESCORT' is....and in fact, 'escorts' are legal in DC, while PIMPING and PROSTITUTION is ILLEGAL....

the word 'escort' is really part of the MSM distortion of 'gannon's real profession: pimp/prostitute....

CBS.com - Rove-Gannon Connection? Feb. 18, 2005

<snip>
But Rove's dominance of White House and Republican politics, Gannon's aggressively partisan work and the ease with which he got day passes for the White House press room the past two years make it hard to believe that he wasn't at least implicitly sanctioned by the "boy genius." Rove, who rarely gave on-the-record interviews to the MSM (mainstream media), had time to talk to GOPUSA, which owns Talon.
</snip>

NEWSWEEK PERISCOPE: Gannon's Enemies List February 20, 9:47 am ET

Jeff Gannon is considering suing liberal interest groups, bloggers and others for a "political assassination" that drove him from his job as a reporter for a conservative news outfit called Talon News, he told NEWSWEEK. Gannon, whose real name is James Guckert, singled out Media Matters -- a "well-funded" liberal group headed by longtime "attack dog" David Brock. ("Everything we wrote about him came from the public record," Brock replied.)
</snip>

If Guckert sues, it'll be in the news every day for months!:thumbsup:

25. Here.."The Mole, the US Media and a White House Coup!" London/Guardian
Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 03:48 PM by KoKo01
This is an excellent wrap up of where we are with this story...

Focus: News control
The mole, the US media and a White House coup

The reporter who wasn't is part of a wider press scandal, writes Paul Harris in New York

Sunday February 20, 2005
The Observer

For two years Jeff Gannon cut an unobtrusive figure at White House press conferences. The shaven-headed, craggily handsome man worked for an obscure news agency called Talon News, known for its conservative sympathies. He was often the subject of jokes by colleagues on weightier news organisations.

No one is laughing now, because Gannon was far from being a harmless distraction. He was writing under a false name and working for a Republican front organisation. Suddenly, his 'softball' questions to White House officials looked less like eccentricities and more like plotting by an administration which has frequently displayed a dark mastery of the arts of press control.

When it emerged that Gannon was also linked to gay prostitution websites and might be a gay prostitute himself, the scandal as to how he was allowed daily access to the White House grew even murkier. The American media is now being forced to confront the possibility that Gannon, whose real name is James Guckert, was simply a Republican plant, used by officials, including President George W Bush, to ask easy questions in difficult press conferences. 'The idea of having a mole in the White House press corp is amazing, but that's what it looks like,' said Jack Lule, a journalism professor at Lehigh University.

But the Gannon affair, which has shocked much of America's political establishment, is just the latest scandal in the media establishment. Newspapers including the New York Times and USA Today have been hit by plagiarism and forgery scandals. Other papers and television stations have been consumed with a soul-searching inquest into how they were misled about non-existent Iraqi weapons programmes. Added to that is growing evidence of a White House campaign to bypass or control the media in its everyday presentation of government policy , which included paying one journalist hundreds of thousands of dollars to promote its policies.

The extent of the Bush White House's command and control of the press corps is often revealed in the seemingly innocuous White House pool reports. These are dispatches dutifully filed by a correspondent assigned to travel with Bush and contain little but lists of endless meetings, meals eaten and clothes worn. But no detail is too small to be ignored by Bush's ever-watchful press handlers. One report, on 13 August 2004, contained a remark from Bush that it was a 'good question' as to who to support if Iraq's soccer team played the United States in the Olympics. Officials scurried to 'correct' it. 'To clear up any possible misconception ... the president would of course support the American soccer team in any hypothetical game with Iraq,' a new report said. 'The initial report should have done more to reflect the exchange was mainly in jest.'

their denials. It is picking up steam and the MSM is ALL working on it. They have to verify and research all the little side stories and I'm sure there are threats a flyin' by now. This is sort of like Heidi Fleiss (Sp?) goes to Washington on STEROIDS, if they can break it.

I doubt everything we are reading is true, but there is some truth out there and it will get covered. BTW, I hear bush has been greeted in Europe with this story too! It appears as if his counter-attack is to pretend to have a crush on a lady reporter for the EU public to see!

and whistling by the graveyard.

This is going to build. This story is a battle to the death now between Rove's and Cheney's factions and Cheney will win because Cheney controls the oil interests of the oligarchy. No one has control of Mil and Intel at this point. They have broken the traditional Military support for all things Republican.

Rove is losing control of the media, and even those he counted on are starting to bolt. If I trust the Corporatist Media to do anything, it is a devotion to money and power. They can't trust ** to deliver either at this point, so fuck him. If he aint their sugar daddy anymore, he will soon be their punching bag, because Bush** showed the world that there is no difference between a media whore, and a rent-a-boy.

For the moment, it does not matter what Faux or CNN says, the Houston velvet mafia story will out, and a lot of folks will start pointing fingers and guns. Before we do Rove's work for him, let's just see what next week brings.

15. Please remind others about Operation Mockingbird and PsyOps
Operation Mockingbird, the CIA's media manipulation program along with the military's PsyOps/sigint domestic programs (see "CNN and PsyOps" by counterpunch's Alexander Cockburn in March of 2000 for example) and understand that during wartime the DoD isn't going to allow for funding to be stopped or the decisions to be questioned, hence the domestic disinformation campaigns aligned with the administration's policies (no matter what they may be).

how many people watch CNN or Faux? way more than DU or the other blogs combined.

how many people watch network newz? way more than CNN and Faux combined.

until blogs have equivalency what shows up in the MSM and how they report it continues to dominate and control the public's perception of reality.

We swirl around the edges of public perception. Its a good swirl (from us anyhow) and it can raise itself to tsunami levels WITH THE HELP OF THE MSM. Otherwise we are just annoying noise.

34. Probably true
The right is very good at denial or rationalization of stories which make them look bad. Look how many right wingers have had embarassing stories come out about them without even affecting them personally.

They will totally overlook one key aspect of this story--the Bush administration's manipulation of the media. Those on the right who do understand how the media is being manipulated are also likely to consider it to be a good thing. Pravda is their model for the news media.
