he at least believed something worse was coming. See his reply to the Matthew R. letter here: http://www.breakfastwithhunter.com/askhunter.asp

I don't know what his demons were- but i think they were more personal than societal.

3. First Name That Hit Me When I Heard... |

Ernest Hemmingway.
I wonder if Hunter found out his gonzo life had finally caught up with him and rather than face years of pain and ill health decided on the faster exit?

4. his teenage idol, of course |
|
"Perhaps he found what he came here for, but the odds are huge that he didn't. He was an old, sick, and very troubled man, and the illusion of peace and contentment was not enough for him - not even when his friends came up from Cuba and played bullfight with him in the Tram. So finally, and for what he must have thought the best of reasons, he ended it with a shotgun."
Hunter Thompson, 1964

7. i was thinking along those lines too... |
|
although it may have been a lot less than "years" of pain and ill health- he could have been looking at a rapid onset and deterioration of something as well.

9. With some people, there's a fine line between the personal |
|
and the societal. If any line.

15. I'm not going to speculate on what made him do it. I'm just saying |
|
people like him take social issues personally. It's what made him great, and I think it would be hard to separate the two...

I doubt he killed himself over it, though. At 67, I think he didn't want to deal with encroaching decrepitude. He checked out by his own means in his own time, while he was still sharp and raging.

This is almost the worst conspiracy theory I have seen on DU. It's sad, he was a counter cultutal hero, but he was a drug user and a depressed person. I am not surprised he would kill himself and find it ridiculous that "something worse is coming" because he killed himself.... god. And how would he know about it? This is crazy! Sorry.

10. He was a depressed, chemically-dependent man facing old age. |
|
He chose to blow his brains out, rather than deal with it. End of story.

16. HST strikes me as the type of guy that IF |
|
he got something like a cancer diagnosis, say, or perhaps reached some ultimate conclusion while under the influence,(or NOT under the influence)-- that he would prefer to have the control and take himself out. When I heard about the death, I KNEW instantly that a gun was involved. And he probably would have liked it that way.
It would be great if he had some scoop that could take down BushCo. I'm praying for that, (from ANY source) and if HST had some info that it will one day be revealed. IMO that's not likely, tho.
