Thompson says 9-11 was an inside job on this interview clip
http://www.libertythink.com/2005/02/hunter-s-thompson-thought-911-inside.html

Partial transcript:

...

Mick O'Regan: You went on to say in that article, which I have in front of me, that "even ESPN was broadcasting war news. It was the worst disaster in the history of the United States." Do you think that the event completely transformed the way in which Americans see themselves and their own vulnerability?

Hunter S. Thompson: No, the event by itself wouldn't have done that. But it was the way the Administration was able to use that event. Even use it as a springboard for everything they wanted to do. And that might tell you something. I remember when I was writing that column you sort of wonder when something like that happens, Well who stands to benefit? Who had the opportunity and the motive? You just kind of look at these basic things, and I don?t know if I want to go into this on worldwide radio here, but ...

Mick O'Regan: You may as well.

Hunter S. Thompson: All right. Well I saw that the US government was going to benefit, and the White House people, the republican administration to take the mind of the public off of the crashing economy. Now you want to keep in mind that every time a person named Bush gets into office, the nation goes into a drastic recession they call it.

Mick O'Regan: It seems a very long bow to me, but are you sort of suggesting that this worked in the favour of the Bush Administration?

Hunter S. Thompson: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. And I have spent enough time on the inside of, well in the White House and you know, campaigns and I've known enough people who do these things, think this way, to know that the public version of the news or whatever event, is never really what happened.

1. Hunter always cut through the bullshit.
No surprise he knew immediately what the 911 game was.

2. That's what I thought too
when I saw in the days following 911 the way the pictures of the WTC buildings collapsing and the plane hitting the tower were being replayed over and over again in a seeming endless loop accompanied by the talking media whores gabbing nonstop in the background about the "Osama/Al Quaida" terrorists. I thought to myself that if it was a true terrorist strike then someone at least knew it was coming and let it happen in order to take advantage of the fear and stress it would cause on the public (IOW, a typical Black Op type scenario). But then I had read about Operation Northwoods and was fully aware that the Gulf of Tonkin incident was just another cooked up excuse to start a war for military indsutrial complex profit, so I guess I was inclined to be cynical.

When I heard about the claim that they had found the the terrorist's passport lying in the rubble on the street that was the icing on the cake. Since then we've seen how they tried their level best to stonewall the investigations and failed to fire or punish anyone involved in the breakdowns that allowed this event to happen (in fact some have been promoted). As it became clearer and clearer that the whole bunch of them ,Condisleeza, Boy King George, Dick "The Sneer" Cheney etc. were lying though thier teeth about the lack of warnings that such a terrorist strike was in the works, (see Crossing the Rubicon by Mike Ruppert)it has done nothing to change my mind.

Finally take a look at this instructional flash video presentation "How to spot a liar" by Take Back the Media:

3. Excellent video!
Shrub isn't a good liar.

If you listened to the interview, Thompson said he read the Paris newspapers for the real news.

4. Me too. I was at home on 9/11
because I was sick with the flu. I slept in and eventually got up to take some meds. I flipped on the TV to veg out and the first thing I saw was the south tower collapsing. My first thought was that I REALLY needed to try to keep up with the news a bit more because I had no idea they were planning to implode the WTC. Seriously. That's what I thought was happening.

Of course, I realized I was wrong after I listened for a bit and heard about the hijackings. Then when they said a plane had been flown into the WTC my first thought was that Dubya was behind it. I swear I'm not making that up. That was my absolute first thought. If you remember back to just before 9/11, the news was all full of how the economy was tanking so I figured Dubya crashed a plane into a building to give them something else to talk about. We all know how he absolutely hates negative press. So anyway, when the newscaster went on to describe the 4 separate well-coordinated hijackings and said that thing whole thing appeared to be extremely well-planned and executed, my first thought was that Dubya couldn't have been behind it because he's a complete idiot. Seriously. Of course I was wrong there too. Not in regards to Dubya being a complete idiot, mind you, because he is, but rather on not broadening the scope of where to lay the blame. I should have included the entire administration and the neo-cons in my initial assessment. My bad. Hey, I had the flu and wasn't thinking too clearly. Cut me some slack please.

5. Yep, the Big Lie in action
Repeat in long enough and loud enough, and people will start to believe that not just one, but two 100 plus story buildings, designed to withstand the impact of large planes, can somehow miraclusly fall straight down into their own footprint.

Yep, that is what we all saw on television that day, the Big Lie. And sad to say, the majority of Americans bought it.
