They are already trying. Just remeber it's not very simple. The US customer demands quality. Then there is the issue of safety, emissions, and incorporating new technology. Then there is ability style and design for a market. But once China figures this out, and eventually they will look out Germans and Japanese.

They have made automobiles, just nothing worth exporting. Someone would have to invest the money in a plant, and an automobile plant isnt just a sweatshop, it takes a large investment.

4. They do, and you don't want one. |
|
They make a number of models, all of which, until recently, paled in comparison to comparable vehicles offered in the U.S. The majority of Chinese are still poor, by western standards, and vehicles which they can afford offer few amenities. They suffer from quality and safety issues, but I suspect this will change as China evolves into the next century.

7. Actually, they do. Buick has a plant there. |
|
So does Volkswagon, among others....I believe GM is starting a truck plant there as well.
You'd be hardpressed to tell the difference between the US made vs. China made.

8. They're working on electric and alternative energy cars... |
|
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6290392/If they can spring out of the gate with a car that doesn't use gasoline.... well, they might be controlling the world in a decade or two.
