Until This Week, I Had Never Heard of the BTK Killer.
Honestly.

Does it matter? Is this another diversion? Just how important is this particular story in the scheme of things that effect most Americans? How does this story impact me personally? More than the shit * is pulling on a daily basis? I think not.

BTW - I still haven't read anything about it...

1. Well -- if you look at it that way...
all stories that aren't political are diversions, of a sort. The tsunami didn't affect me personally, but I'm glad it was covered. I mean, I get your point, but I do think the news should cover more than just politics. If this is the BTK guy, it's great news: he scared the living daylights out of Wichita for years, and taunted the police with letters.

That said... it probably will receive WAY excessive coverage in the M$M...

2. Some people (like me) follow true crime and cold cases
I haven't seen any of the media coverage of it because I really mostly get my news from DU and my local paper.

3. I am a true crime person myself
This is almost akin to Zodiac mailing portions of Paul Stine's bloody shirt to the authorities and then getting nailed, finally!

More on BTK (and many other cases):

4. Didn't we talk about this before (or am I having deja vu)?
I think we discussed the idea of a true crime group here on DU. I would be very interested in that. :hi:

And I agree with you on the Zodiac comparison here. I wonder if we'll ever definitely prove who he was?

9. Yes, but then I got busy
Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 04:42 PM by XanaDUer
am trying to find another job, and move at the same time.

Anyone interested, send me a PM so I can keep track. I think mitchum wanted in, as well.

As for Zodiac, yes, I think eventually someone will find something indicating that he was the Zodiac. when that will be, who knows?

8. apparently committed a string (10) grisly murders in late 70's early 80's,
and sent letters to the authorities as "BTK" (Blind, Torture and Kill). ugh.

Went "silent" for a while then recently sent photos from the murders with other info, as the police described it, implicating himself in the unsolved murders. He was a suspect all along, I guess...DA needed more connections to bring charges.

Saw a background piece in today's paper...

11. I'd heard about him 20 years ago
but didn't have a clue until my memory was jogged by "bind, torture, kill."

No, the story doesn't affect you or me. It's only mildly diverting to those of us who live outside Kansas.

However, the MSM needs something to keep our minds off Guckert.

12. I am definitely up for a true crime group. I have read all of Anne Rule!
Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 05:27 PM by Riding this Donkey
I think one of her spookiest books was about Jerry Brudos, who killed his victims down in his cellar.

He lived with his wife, but she wasn't allowed in the cellar, so she never went down there and didn't know what he was doing.

Well he cut off body parts and kept them in the fridge! And he would bring her up the meat from the cellar freezer!
