I'll start by saying that I may be too sensitive about this issue. But it's really pissing me off.

Last night I was all excited to sit down and watch Bill Maher @ 11pm.
The panel guests were: Tucker Carlson, Stephanie Tubbs-Jones & Tim Robbins. So I'm thinking Tuckers a dick but the other two are great, this sounds good.

Well, IMHO it WASN'T good. And not because of the guests. Rather, it wasn't good because of MAHER. It really felt to me like he was scooting over to the middle.. toward the "right". I was actually shocked. He was walking all over everything Stephanie & Tim said- and basically said that even though the reasons for going into war were bad..... the elections in Iraq make it good. Tim Robbins pointed out that over 100,000 Iraqis have died since we got there & Maher said he'd never heard that & that he thought 100,000 would have died anyway even if we weren't there because Hussein was evil. To me it really felt like he was saying the "ends" justify the means.
He also really went after Tubbs-Jones about religious freedom & human rights violations.

It reminded me of how nuts Dennis Miller has gone.

Is EVERYONE going to participate in the revised version of history & start declaring that Bush is fine now because those elections went off? BIG DEAL! Big FUCKING DEAL. There, I said it. BFD. George Bush is NOT a visionary, he is NOT a great president, and trying to say he saw things we didn't is BULLSHIT. Complete B.S.

Does anyone else see the media that wasn't previously on the Repub bandwagon going over in that direction? the only 3 people I dint see going that way are: Jon Stewart, Keith Olbermann & Ron Reagan.

Thoughts?

1. I wondered about the exploding head thing. But then I thought, HBO
may be exerting some pressure on him to "centrist" the show.

7. I didn't see the show
But never count on Maher. He's kind of an asshole. He's not so much of an asshole that he couldn't see that Bush is a bad, bad president, so we got behind him, but Maher is mainly his own fan club. I saw him on Larry King at one point during the election cycle and he couldn't handle the questions at all, and they weren't that tough. Stewart, Olbermann and Reagan are all way more intelligent and informed.

9. Totally agree

Your post (OP) says exactly what I was thinking, too.

This was foreshadowed in last week's show, if you saw the thread on that show.

I know that I will no longer be looking forward to Real Time nor making sure I don't miss it.

::sigh::

10. Maher has always been all over the map politically
and maybe he had a hot date with Coulter that night <shudder>.

He also seems to get a charge out of playing devil's advocate with both sides.

Personally, I always found it politic to take him with a very large pinch of salt, no matter what he was saying. I will always remember my favorite show of his, on the old PI, when he spent the entire show holding hands very sweetly with the latex sex doll.

His show is still one of the few where anyone to the left of Hitler isn't shouted down, confronted with a disconnected microphone, or expected to agree with the right wingers by the end of the show.

11. Maybe the neo-pukes got something on Maher and turned him
Not as far fetched as you might believe. We know the White House is trying to control the press, look at Jeff Gannon. It wouldn't surprise me if the neos turned Maher.

12. All the death all the money to install a theocracy is a success?
Sounds like he is starting to shill. Don't need anymore of them. I will watch the rerun and if this continues-i will just cancel HBO.

13. First of all, Maher's not a very bight guy, so
methinks you expect too much.

btw: the 100,000 figure comes from the World Health Organization....

14. A suggestion
Do not put people on pedestals. They tend to fall off. Ideas are a good thing to champion. You can stay consistant to them. But a person other than yourself has a life you have no knowledge of. They cannot be your champion. They can only be their own person.

15. He commented that he couldn't get right-wing guests on his show.
And then said that it wasn't fair that the right wasn't represented in the audience, and they should be there. But quite frankly, I think a lot of people are turned off by his gratuitous foul language. He uses the F-word more than ever, and in the way that says "hey, I'm cool, and I can cuss whenever the * I want."

You're right about Maher being his own biggest fan. And I'm just not that impressed. His ego will be his undoing.

16. It was weird
Last week I didn't think he was actually praising the war, but was talking about political strategy when he was talking about freedom. But when he compared Bush to Carter and Kennedy last night, I was ready to throw a shoe at the tv. And when he asked for conservatives to come to the show, I don't even know what that was about.

It was comical to see Tucker argue against the Bush democracy at gun point agenda though.

18. Last season shows, were really good, IMO
Leading up to the elections... The first 2 shows this season, haven't been that smooth. Wether it's the interviews with people like Jose, or him comparing Bush's freedom march to Carter, it's just not flowing so far...

But we shall see.
