What do you think of Vietnam games? |
|
Something I noticed this weekend when I was looking for new pc games. There seems to be a preponderance of Vietnam shooters out there lately. While I like the WW II first-person shooter games, as I think that it was the only war that was both inevitable and necessary this country has fought, yet somehow a Vietnam games seems in poor taste. Since even today, the schism that conflict created in our country (much like the current one) is still fresh, so somehow I fail to see these games as exciting or portraying the war as heroic like WW II. Especially, as I noted, due to half the country divided down the middle with the current oil/empire-building wars, this doesn't seem to be the best time to capitalize on Vietnam.
I'm sure pro-war Neocons would disagree (one of my radical right co-workers loves these games), but how many of you who may play shooter games now would refuse to buy a Vietnam-based one and why?
This question also might include middle-east-based games. While I've only noticed a few and they seem mostly based on a Desert Storm or generic conflict, I'm almost certain there's Iraq-based ones out there I haven't noticed yet.

1. Can you actually win in the Vietnam games? |
|
If so that would mean that they are science fiction.
It would be nice if they would show the pointlessness, and futility of trying to fight against a popular insurgency.
