Is there any good reason to remain in the US?
I am called, daily, a terrorist, traitor, communist, and murderer (since I don't think the SC should interfere in a woman's relationship with her physician) by thousands of right-wing loonies who dominate the airwaves. And roughly 1/2 the country agrees with that characterization, given the results from November. Wouldn't life be better in a more rational country?

4. Spring training games started today...
The Nationals beat the Mets.

I would recommend not listening to radio stations that call you names and stick to reading "Smithsonian" or something. It's a good country. And it's not filled with Germans or Swedes or something.

But, you know, if you guys are organizing a junket to Ireland, I might be interested.

Why wasn't I born someplace blue? Instead, I have the best family in the universe and don't want to leave because of them and have no future where I'm at. *sigh* I hate decisions.

19. and oddly, that means fixing the US first.
Since the US so effectively exports its ugly politics to the world,
from outside, one has no choice, if one loves the "more rationale
country", to get the US sorted.

Yet from abroad, the US is a stage, and as a writer, the actors all
repeat lines written for them on the internet... so a writer abroad,
not needing to be bothered with props and blocking of the stage,
can sit in the dark audience and craft better lines. :-)

24. What good did the german resistance do against hitler? It took a world
united against hitler to stop him, and I expect to see NATO troops on the streets of Washington before these New Americanazis are stopped, and that won't happen for a good 10-15 years.

You don't think protests can stop the people who have stolen the US elections, do you?

30. The problem is that by staying here and paying taxes
you're supporting the right-wingers and their causes whether you want to or not. Personally, I think they should streamline the process to make it more efficient by adding categories on your paystub for deductions that go straight to Haliburton, Bechtel, etc. While I realize that leaving is not for everyone, by staying here and paying taxes, I'm supporting this regime and everything it stands for. I can't afford to leave either, but when I look at it as a whole, I also can't afford to stay here. I hope to be able to scrape up enough money to get to Canada at some point because I can no longer justify paying taxes to the current regime. I think the elections were rigged (in 2002 and 2004) and I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

Oh, and as for your comment that protest is just ego masturbation for the unemployed, if you would attend a protest or two I think you would find that the majority of protestors do in fact have jobs. The idea that all protestors are lazy, unemployed, anti-american welfare collectors is nothing but right-wing propaganda.

35. Would you say that Rosa Parks was engaging in ego
masturbation?

How about the Boston Tea Party?

Protest has played a large role in our history, and serves a genuine purpose.

IF our country were a fair and totally responsive democracy, perhaps there would be no reason to protest.

Which is why the question of whether the election was stolen -- or whether it COULD be stolen (it could) -- is of extreme importance.

You don't have to agree that it was stolen, but the fact that private companies with political connections own the software and the machines that collect and count the ballots SHOULD be a cause of concern for you.

It will take NATO in the streets of Washington DC to overthrow and dismantle the bush regime.

I fear we are past the point where the local resistance can do much. They steal elections, ram through legislation that the majority of the people are against, spend billions of my great-grandchildrens' money killing Iraqi's who are no more a threat to me than the little mouse that lives in my basement, and have complete control over the media.

I don't think we'll love to see them killing Dems by the thousands, but I DO think we could get to the point where outspoken left/Dem business owners have their shops vandalized because of their politics. I don't see any moral core to the people who run the country now - *, Cheney, Scalia, Gonzalez, Delay, Frist, Falwell, Dobson, Limbaugh, Hannity, etc. the fact that ANYONE believes or even pays attention to Coulter is a symptom of the nation's untreatble cancer.

With all that, being almost 50, Europe looks better and better.

22. I don't know if there is such a thing as a "more rational country," but
there are many many beautiful places in the world in which to live besides the USA. Barcelona, Spain; Telemark, Norway; Innsbruck, Austria; Alajuela, Costa Rica; Ouro Preto, Brasil; Aachen, Germany, Gronigen, Netherlands; Praha, Verona, Basil, Wein, München, Köln, Oslo, Copenhagen, Los Pirineos, Foz do Iguaçu...

Plenty of good reasons to go somewhere else... except for Louisiana crawfish, boudin, etouffe, andouille, jambalaya, gumbo, and da Mardi Gras! :9

25. If you can afford it, go ahead.
You will need lots of money and/or a marketable profession. You also need no responsibilities that might keep you here.

Of course, you can find something to dislike everywhere you go. If you find you miss hate radio, you can probably find some people overseas who'll hate you for being an American.

40. Why would anyone hate me for being smart enough to leave before I get
thrown in prison for being a dissenter?

Europeans aren't unreasonable hate radio addicts like most of the USA... they're not slaves to the teevee or mass media like americans are.

This isn't about disliking the new americanazis... this is about protecting myself and my family from the evil freaks in the white house. No more than the jews defended themselves from the germans, is my defense of my family.

Moving to europe is no different than moving anywhere else on the planet. It just takes some planning and the good fortune of having invested in the Los Angeles real estate market.

I have no other family than my daughter, and she will definitely benefit from NOT being raised in this shit hole.

27. I think the USA
is the best country in the world. It's got serious problems, many that a direct consequence of neglect of issues of yesterday. And if there is a draft, I may send my boys elsewhere. But I'll stay, and I will do everything possible to improve the social fabric in this great nation.

One of my best friends has moved to Canada. He tells me, "Get out while you can. The empire is falling." I understand that. I know that there will have to be great changes to revitalize America. But it is worth every bit of energy we invest.

28. Welp. there's none that I can think of
and having travelled abroad, i know damn well that the US isn't close to being "the best country in the world.'

Once I get my degree, I'll be applying for positions in Canada and overseas. There's no sense in trying to pursue a career in public health in America- where no one listens to scientists, rational economists or progressive thinkers. Why bang my head against the wall and waste the rest of my adult life?

I do believe in staying to fight and all.

But I'm 40, I have kids, and I want to enjoy some of my life too.

If the US is so damn set on making me a 2nd class citizen, and lovely Canada is willing to give me and my partner full rights, I don't see much reason to stick around.

It's one thing to stay and fight. It's another to do so without even the same rights as your fellow citizens.

43. many countries will not allow you to work
If you need a job to bring income, you are going to have problems, because a great many countries restrict immigrants from working legally. If you're independently wealthy, sure, you can go where you like.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.
