Does anyone know if this Falwell story is legit?

*Notice* the phrase "bordered on cruelty." Seems well over the line of cruelty to me..

"There were times that Dad’s pranks bordered on cruelty. One of his oil-company workers, a one-legged man he nicknamed “Crip” Smith, complained about everything. Dad and Crip’s co-workers got tired of the old man’s bellyaching and decided to take revenge. One morning Crip called in sick and Dad volunteered to send by lunch to his grateful but suspicious employee. Dad and his chums caught Crip’s old black tomcat, killed it, skinned it, and cooked it in the kitchen of one of Dad’s little restaurants. They called it squirrel meat and delivered it to Crip on a linen-covered tray. When Crip returned to work the next morning, Dad and his co-conspirators asked him how he liked his meal. They knew he would complain even about a free home-cooked lunch, and when Crip called it “the toughest squirrel meat” he had ever eaten, they were glad to tell him why."

6. His father owned an oil company?

I always thought that Falwell, like Woodward, had some sort of intelligence connection. Never know. Oil company buddies did all sorts of things in the 1950's.

Crip, an employee of Falwell's oil company, got to uppity so they killed his cat and fed it to him?

This sounds like the actions of a school bully.

I highly doubt this story. What if that tomcat was Crip's only friend? Certainly, the cat must have meant something to Crip, since the "prank" wouldn't have been as effective if it had been any random animal.

And why would you feed a sick man a tomcat anyways? Wouldn't Falwell's dad be concerned with food poisoning?

If this story is true, for the first time I feel sorry for Jerry Falwell. I would be afraid of a man who would inflict such cruelty on another person.

It must have been tough for Jerry to have grown up with a father who could be so thoughtless and petty.
