Who here has sacrificed their job because of politics
I count myself in that group. I worked for an organization with a very right wing fundaentalist owner. It's a $2 billion company and my job paid in the mid 100's. It was a huge sacrifice for me, but something that I had to do for my sanity.

Anyone else made a similar sacrifice. Btw, I have no regrets. I am struggling right now to get my own consulting practice up and running, but I don't regret what I did.

1. Well, I never had to make that sacrifice, since I was a stay at home mom.
Although, I just about wore a hole in my tongue at many a buiness party (that was in strong conservative banking Houston country). It was a very courageous thing to do and I hope your new business is an astounding sucess.

2. I quit working at a law firm...
Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 10:44 AM by slor
in Cincinnati (IT Dept.) due to right winged morons. The pay was NOT that great for the abuse we had to endure from tantrum tossing overpaid babies, and they loved the chimp. I decided I would not return, while I was on my honeymoon, and I realized what true happiness was, and I decided to not put up with the crap anymore. I returned to teaching 3 year olds at a Montessori school, and opened a vintage clothing store. Thanks to the chimp, the school closed (parents lost vouchers), and my partner was stealing, but I am remaking the store, and I work part-time at the library (I love it).

3. Liberal/Progressive = Talk Radio
Late 80's & early 90's...I was expected to "conform" to a more "conservative" tone that radio was taking. I smelled it as being politically motivated corporate games and paid a career price at the time that nearly destroyed my marriage, finances and future.

I won't bore with the details, but I ended up suing a large radio operation for breech of contract, won and took that money to move home and set up a business. It took a decade of hard work until I could look back on that time with any objectivity.

On top of that, I've worked with or for dozens of Conservative owners...some right wing religious fundies...other "let make money" ones...but they all held that Repugnican trait of selfishness, greed and ignorance.

Good luck with your consulting. Here's wishing you the greatest success...and that you can look back, like I do now, and feel not only was it worth it, but worth every struggle along the way.

I can afford to be more political in my work now, since I refuse to work with a client who promote right wing and hate radio agendas. Too bad there aren't more out there.

Cheers!

4. I suspect there are tons of people that would love to follow their
hearts of out the ultra conservative greedy atmosphere of right wing american business but just can't do it because they have finacial dependents and few chances at replacement jobs which are any better. However, every time you and others make those changes, things get a bit better. Thanks to you and to the original poster.

6. More The Reason I Try To Help Others Now
Nothing makes a business succede better than self confidence and persistence. It's real tough at the start and be prepared for them to always be tested, but if you believe in yourself, your abilities and your purpose, there are still ways to succede in this country. Too many have been beaten into wage slaves and become trapped in losing their identity and dreams to keep up with the mortgage and car payments.

I'm lucky and have helped others set up their own businesses...joining forces on projects to out-perform large corporations in quality and at a fraction of their costs and expenses.

My parents were aghast when I went on my own...despite my father being a GP and having his own practice for 30 years...as they grew up in the Depression/New Deal attitude that either the unions, employer or the government would take care of you. I learned at an early age not to believe that any of those would help me when I needed it...and I haven't been wrong.

My fun is now to walk into situations where I'm surrounded by repugnicans and the like and they assume I'm one of them, until they ask me a question. Then my fun begins.

Cheers!

9. The parents can be such a wild card
I know some who know just how to support the effort, and others, like mine, to whom a corporate job is THE only safe thing to do.

11. The Confused Dream
At one time...and honestly I couldn't say there was such a time in American history, but people like my parents believed in the benevolence of big government, corporations and unions. In general, people want certainty. They want to know they're "going to heaven" or in a big brother who will watch over them. I guess I never bought into that theory.

Too many of my generation got caught up in our own rat races...conflicts between being individuals and "a team player"...wanting to have children, but not liking the extra strain those kids had on relationships and freedom...wanting financial independence and freedom, but also wanting long, stable careers with a minimum of stress and politics. No wonder so many are so frustrated or just detached these days.

5. I was Jesse Jackson's convention whip and I worked for a
bank -- customers called the president and said how could they allow a white girl to work for them and do the horrible things she is doing? People threatened to close accounts. Thankfully, the prez was a cool guy and didn't cave.

12. Well the bank was in Birmingham and he was from Northern
Virginia - cool guy. He just laughed about it. No one would have known except they put a big article about me and a picture in the paper.
