Just my thoughts.
I've never posted a thread in GD before, but everyone seemed to think that this would be appropriate over here.

Last night I was depressed because life is complicated right now, and I just felt so lost and confused as to what to do. So I was feeling sorry for myself last night, and crying.

Then my tears changed in nature. They turned into sobs, sobs because I wondered how it was I came to be here, in the United States. As a person who has no faith in a higher power, to me it’s just luck of the draw. But I feel guilty for my luck. I live in this country, that offers so much opportunity.

I think of all I have that I take for granted, electricity, clean water, and food. I don’t have to worry about if I’ll eat tomorrow. I don’t have worry that a solider is going to come raid my house. I don’t have to worry that I’ll be killed or persecuted for my beliefs (or lack of). And yet I complain about my life? It’s not right, I have everything.

I am thankful to live here. I disagree with the way this country is being led, what we’re doing in this world, but I am thankful I live here.

It’s unfair for me to here, when I’m sure there are many, much more deserving, people out there. People who would to do good with opportunities that every American has. Opportunities for a good education.

We are lucky in many, many ways. And we’re only here because of luck. Some people will say that it’s God’s will that they were born here, or something like that, but I don’t believe in God. So I think it’s all luck, I could have easily been born some where in Africa. Or in Iraq, or Afghanistan.

Life is such a funny thing, such a fleeting thing.

I wish I was better, I wish I could use the things I have that I have in front of me. Or at least give them to someone who would use them. I wish this world was different. I wish life was better for everyone, I wish we could stop hating each other. I wish we could stop destroying each other.

I wish everything was just… better.

2. If more folks were like you and thought about....
what it means to be a citizen and a human being it would be a better world.

Your line "..give them to someone who would use them..." really made me stop and think.

Nice post.

9. I have always been grateful to live here.....
And now I am starting to be afraid. When I was a kid there was no internets, if someone said liberals should be rounded up and shot at school you would think they were crazy. Now there's just so....so MUCH out there and for the first time I wonder if we are the inclusive country my grandparents came to to start a new life. Anyhow I enjoyed reading your presentation and certaily hope it is not your last thread at GD! :hi:

12. Some times I can't fall asleep knowing how twisted things have
become. Our nation was the big brother not the big bully. We were once liberators, not invaders.

I know we are very lucky to live in this nation, but at the same time I am all too aware of the slow and methodical erosions of our rights. DU helps me maintain a sense of control in a world where I have very little control.

Information found here helps me keep a balance and a sanity, but at times I feel like Charlie in the novel "Flowers for Algernon". Wasn't I better off not knowing how bad things are?

Any way, just sharing with you as you did with us. I too wish everything was better, I wish I could do more to make things better. I haven't lost hope, DU helps to remain hopeful. Post like yours help me remain hopeful for the future and help me keep my perspective.

Thank you! :hi:

14. Flowers for Algernon....
Now you have me reflecting on one of the movies/books that really makes me think. You are absolutely right in the parallel. Sometimes I wish I were like one of my politically unaware friends and didn't know/care so much. Not that I would trade them, but it certainly would be 'easier'.

17. I know it is sort of weird, some times I pity my uninformed friends
for not knowing what is happening and for not caring to know. Other times I think that they are the lucky ones, they don't how fragile things really are in the world.

27. merh has a point
I've not seen your posts, but I looked at your profile and find your "Comment" comment absolutely hilarious.

And, just to share an experience I had about 2 years ago, while singing in the church choir...It was around Veteran's Day (one of which I am) and we were singing, "Let There Be Peace on Earth". I had to stop singing because I had to restrain my sobs (and me being a fine broth of a lad 62 years of age).

These times are indeed emotionally charged. I feel with you.

13. Yes, we are all lucky.
And I think we can spend part of our time just enjoying and appreciating what we have.

But since we have so much -- relatively speaking (I mean, everyone HERE at least has internet access) -- I think we also have a responsibility to give BACK. We need to write thoughtful essays or adopt children or make beautiful paintings or invent something or write emails to senators... I don't know! But I think we have an obligation to contribute to the world, if we can, if we're beyond merely surviving.

We have to give back.

It's just a matter of finding a way that you can give back and try to make things better. :)

28. Interesting Post Rev...
In my experience ... Nothing happens by chance. We all are on a journey of experiences. This time around you have been given a different deck to play with. To appreciate every moment that one lives is truly a blessing. It will take you to places that you can't begin to imagine.

Keep searching.... Keep asking questions.... the answers will find you.
