Why Don't The Dems Use Fred Phelps As A Wedge Issue?
I mean, it's a friggin' no brainer.

See the boogeyman? The boogeyman is Fred Phelps. Fred Phelps represents what you get when you support religious rightwingers. Are these your values? They aren't ours. And they aren't the values of America, are they?

See the boogeyman? The boogeyman is Fred Phelps.

3. Who cares?
He represents the VALUES of the current GOP (although they aren't as blunt). The Dems can repudiate him loudly and use him as a wedge issue.

They should also use Lou Sheldon, Beverly LaHaye and a number of the other nutjobs. But Phelps is media perfect for this job.

4. He's not a Republican
Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 07:55 PM by B0S0X87
He protests Jerry Falwell and calls Bush the "fag president."

Even right-wingers think he's a whacko.

I suppose using him as a wedge issue would be like Republicans using Lyndon LaRouche against us.

6. If I remember correctly most national Dems opposed gay marriage
Yet the Republicans successfully used it as a wedge issue.

We can do the same with Phelps. His agenda is the GOP agenda.

5. They just don't seem to have the guts
to get down and dirty like they have to if they are ever going to start winning again. Unlike the other side, we do not have to resort to lies and slander. The truth is damning enough, yet they still seem to afraid to use the ammo that the other side keeps giving them.

14. I live in Kansas
and we have found the best way to deal with this moran is to ignore him.

He was just defeated in two different poll issues this week in Topeka. So he is bound to be a publicity hound for awhile now. And hey, he wins this round here on DU - how many threads have discussed him lately?

10. He wrote a letter to Dean inviting him to speak and giving him congrads on
becoming chairman. YUK! I hope Dean didn't read it just after eating.

9. Scandals only work when people already know and trust
the person.

I've never heard of him. (Then again, I'm hopelessly out of touch with pop culture.)

It's the reason the Gannon issue didn't catch on big.

12. Because we don't do wedge issues
Apparently, "we" don't want to win badly enough.
