Slavery in Niger- Disturbing Report on RCI tonight
This evening, on As It Happens(Radio Candada International), there was a very disturbing report on slavery in Niger.

Apparently slavery has still been going on in Niger, and last year, a law was passed there to formally end slavery and ban it.

They were supposed to have a ceremony this weekend to celebrate that legislation, and even encouraged current slaves to show up to the ceremony, so that they would indeed know they are free.

The ceremony had to be cancelled, b/c hardly anyone showed up. Some government intimidation is expected.

That story got me to thinking about Bushie and his so-called desire to spread democracy all throughout the world. If there was ever a place that was crying out for democracy, Niger is it. Moreover, I'm sure the State Department is aware of this issue, b/c it is always collecting information on human rights abuses around the world.

So where is our government on this issue? Can Niger get a shout-out from the Bush regime?

2. Ding, Ding, Ding....You Got It!
That was EXACTLY my first thought!

Niger sure could get a shout-out from Shrub, when it came to their allegedly supplying Iraq with yellowcake uranium.

But on the issue of slavery.....not a peep!

Quite amazing, isn't it?

If you don't get it on your regular radio anymore, why not think of procuring a shortwave radio?

I love listening to programming (such as RCI) on my shortwave radio, because you get a totally different perspective. Most international broadcasts will cover things you would never hear about here in the United States. The slavery in Niger is a perfect example of that. As I was listening to it on RCI, the thought occured to me that stations such as NPR wouldn't probably touch that story.

6. LOL!
I've got 3 shortwave radios too; a small E-Traveller one, and then 2 other ones, both by Grundig! Don't know what I'd do w/o them. They are my "babies" (lol!)
