1. He's either retiring the character or Uncle Duke

has a severe case of cognitive dissonance. .. Frame 3 was enough for me to "get it".

2. Those are two separate comics (i.e. two separate days)
Note the "3-7" on the first strip, and the "3-8" on the second strip.

5. I think that Uncle Duke was styled after Hunter Thompson
and with Thompson recently dying he's probably following suit

6. I was wondering how Trudeau was going to handle it..........
now it starts to unfold. I saw Hunter on "Biography" last night. It was sad to realize that his voice is now silenced. Just when we needed him most, but that seems to be the nature of things. Someone else must now pick up and wear the mantle that Hunter discarded.
That's one tough mantle to fill. Hunter, :toast: buddy.

8. Geau, Trudeau!
I bet we see a brilliant tribute to Thompson out of all this. Nice nod to Steadman in panel 3 of the first strip, too!

9. The thing that struck me has funny
about Hunter Thompson

is that the older he got the more he started looking like the Dali Lama

In a really weird way, I guess you could say they were kindred spirits?
