I found out Yesterday, I'm one of the latest "Identity Theft" Victims!
CitiBank called me up and told me, someone Changed the address on one of my Credit Cards, then went on to charged $600.00+ in computer software on-line. :hurts:

It did boost my confidence it the CitiBanks Security control measures, though.

Any Advice? Questions?

1. that sucks.
i'd say check EVERY card you have. everything you can think of. check your credit report, make sure that doesn't get messed up. if you take care of it now, you won't end up with problems later.

9. people wouldnt use credit cards
if companies didnt pick up the bill for thefts, it would be too financially risky to carry it

10. No, they said I'm not liable for the $600.00
They wouldn't tell me where they changed the address to, though. I wish I could get that info.

29. take them to small claims court
you will win because it will cost Citibank more than $600 to send someone ...

Take my advice on this one should you find no other recourse.

And ... close the damn account out as soon as you can and never do business with these crooks again.

It is NOT your responsiblility!

3. Ask them to take the charges off your account...
I believe they advertise "zero" liability. If not, I believe the max they can charge is $50.

6. Actually, you need to put this request in writing and let them know
you do not expect to have to pay any of those charges. I don't know what you are going to do about your identity though.

This is one of my worst fears!

13. Already taken care of, CitiBank Called me because a Red Flag...
...popped up in their system.

My guess is it was the fact that the changed the Address AND started charging things On-line.

When I called them back, they asked if I had charged anything recently, like Yesterday? I asked them If they were talking about a New Video Editing Keyboard, that I bought about 2 weeks ago, but hadn't got a bill for yet. They said no, that was on there though.

Then they passed me over to their "In-house" Identity Theft Investigation Division.

That when they asked me if I planning on moving in the next few days.

It also turned out that my OTHER Credit Card was ALSO a CitiBank CC, as well as my Gasoline Credit Card, which is probably one of the reasons the "Red Flag" went up.:hippie:

16. CitiBank Did That Too
The Identity Theft Investigator got TransUnion on the line (in a 3-way call) An gave them all the info as I listened.

Then the TransUnion person told me that they are going to pass all the info on to Ecuifax and the other one (I can't remember the name).

The CitiBank guy said they were sending me all the forms to sign in a big package, should have it by tomorrow.

7. That's one club I don't want to have to welcome someone to
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 08:15 PM by RamboLiberal
Had that happen last year to the tune of $150 on my debit card - which I caught immediately, not the bank. Card number stolen, not address - they made 4 charges on my card for music and porn websites.

Now I'm paranoid keeping watch over my accounts.

And if anyone here has made a credit card purchase through DSW Shoe Warehouse - watch your statements - they had a bunch of credit card info from their customers stolen Friday - I posted the story on LBN.

Something else I have to worry about now. :grr:

15. We once had someone charge almost $10K on one of ours..
They had a veritable Par-tay!!

6 round trips tickets to vegas..4 round trip tickets to SanFrancisco
a bunch of electronic stuff

They did catch the guy, and I think he ended up doing time:)

he was stooooooopid.. he used the card number at a store right next door to where he worked..

I had all 3 cards in my possession, and photocopied them & faxed it to Citi..

My son had used his to get some blueprints run, and the little twerp there must have copied the number..

They never charged us a cent :)

8. I just had my identity stolen in January
-File a police report - you'll need the file number to give everyone else.
-Report the incident to all the credit agencies in the US. I'm not sure who they are there, in Canada they're Trans Union and Equifax. Your bank or the police should be able to tell you.
-Notify everyone you have an account with - phone company, power, credit cards. EVERYONE. Have them put a fraud alert on your account. Set up a secondary password with them (ie. your elementary school name) Have this password as a requirement for any account changes over the phone.
-Change all your accounts
-My mail was stolen, so I don't get mail delivered anymore.
-Notify the agency that issues your social security number
-You shouldn't have to pay for the fraud. Citibank should cover it.

It sucks I know. They got ALL my info. Set up 4 credit cards in my name. Got a cell phone. Changed my contact info with my bank (phone number only.) Call forwarded my cell phone to 'my new cell phone' so they could intercept my calls.

COVER ALL YOUR BASES.

Saddened to learn this happened to you. At my office, our CPA's wife had her identity stolen and she still cannot get credit in her name, years later.

Please take steps to protect yourself, post haste.

But that's one of the reasons I posted this question.

The other was, to share this experience so others wouldn't worry so much (because it seems to be in the news almost every day):pals:

20. WOW, that really bad
I was thinking of filing a police report, should I wait until I get all the forms from CitiBank?

I'm starting to think it was an intercepted bill. I'm unemployed right now, so I don't go out and get my mail every day. I really should get better at doing that.

I could have been someone at the Post office too, I've live in this town for a while, and every so often, a magazine, that comes in a sealed plastic bag, shows up opened and thumbed through.

26. Call the police right away
You can get additional info to them later.

If you think your mail was stolen, also report it to the post office.

I live in a locked building and my mailbox is locked. I was really bad about picking up my mail. I didn't use that entrance very often. They got a copy of all my bank/investment statements, credit card bill, phone bills, power bills, Driver's license renewal notice, something with my SIN number on it. They've impersonated me on the phone. They know everything about me. It's very creepy.

30. do a credit check here for free
www.annualcreditreport.com

or

www.freecreditreport.com

I've used the first one recently (all clear thank god) but they ask you for $$$$ for your FICO score if you care to know.

Best of luck to you and I hope you don't find out anything else! I had a charge charged to a credit card about 15 years ago and the company took the charge off as it occurred in a place about 400 miles from where I live at a jewelry store!

31. CitiBank is having all three reports pulled and sent to me
They said, in the packet I just got, that they will call me back in 2 weeks to go over them with me.

On the Work sheet they included, it only says that TransUnion was contacted, You think I should call the other 2 just to make sure they know what's going on?

17. Poor soul!
I'm sorry that happened to you. And hey at least they did let you know unlike some people. I know this one person from my church who was recently robbed and someone stole his credit cards and he noticed it a few days later they were missing and someone already used it for stuff.
So you're lucky they told you. One reason I don't have a credit card (besides I don't have the money heh heh).

19. You've already gotten lots of good advice here...
....and I don't have much to add to it.

BUT...

I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to you. Good news is that it sounds as if Citibank followed-up on it pretty quickly so, hopefully, not too much damage has been done and they'll be able to catch the scum that did this to you. Good luck and I hope it gets straightened out for you post haste.

24. The CitiBank people called it Identity theft, because of all the...
...info they had changed on my account.

They didn't tell me everything that was changed, and I'm withholding a few facts too, just in case;-)

I think they helped me shut it down quick enough that it didn't get too bad.
