Traveling Blue through Red Territory (Boston to Miami)

Next week we're going to be traveling from Boston to visit my sister who lives in Miami.

We're packing-up the whole family into the Toyota Prius Hybrid, taking off the bumper stickers, and motoring straight down Route 95 the whole way.

I'd like to make this expedition a case study in "Traveling Blue."

Aside from a Sonic restaurant near Raleigh, we don't know yet where we should eat or where we should stay.

What I'd like is to try and spend money only in blue counties and only with blue companies.

So, we're not going to be stopping at any Pilot stations, we're not going to eat at MacDonalds.

Anyone have any ideas?

if you're coming down 95, Savannah, GA is blue.
Shell is blue (percentage wise) and if you need to stop for food, Sonic, as you said, or Arby's.

Not all red state people are psycho Republicans. I hope you're pleasantly surprised to find some of us red staters are rabid liberals :)

Meanwhile, I checked the prices for Turf Valley Hotel & Convention Center. They want $159 per night. Not in our budget. Fortunately, my wife has family in DC and we might stay with them.

I just don't want to be in DC during the protests on the 20th.

If you're going down 95, you won't be going through TN, so never mind.
I read that incorrectly. Thought it said 75.
In any case, I don't know of any Hess Gas in most of the South.

11. I spoke to a nice lady at Hess, and you are correct

There won't be any Hess stations until I get south of the Florida panhandle and hit the coast.

Getting 50 MPG or so during the trip in my lovely Toyota Prius, I'll be able to get from the Hess station in Brockton to the one in Trenton on a single tank full with room to spare.

I'll probably need gas again when I hit Raleigh.

However, there is a chain of truck stops called Wilco that uses Hess gasoline. It's owned by a company called AT&T Williams.

I'll have to check and see if there are any Wilco stations on the route.

one night in Chapel Hill, NC where the official color is Carolina BLUE!

9. Adice from a fellow Northener---DON'T SPEED

Honest to God. We have had both family and friends get pulled over by cops (especially in Georgia) and have had to return to stand before a judge!!! They don't like Yankee license plates. And given that we here in Maine would rather shoot someone with a MA license plate (while being driven off the road by them going 100 in a school 15 mph flashing light district---you know what I mean about MA drivers), just don't do your usual thing in front of these rednecks!!!

If there's ever a cop car behind me, even if I'm not doing anything wrong, I get off the road.

Twice I've been minding my own business with a cop cruising along behind me, only to get pull-over.

Once it was because they had put up a very small, non-standard "do not enter" sign in the middle of a minor highway. Never mind that the sign had fallen down. I fought it in front of the magistrate and lost.

So now, if there's a cop behind me, I pull into a parking lot and wait for him to go by. I will try to adopt that to highway driving as well.
