Well, like many DUers, I've written email after email to our so-called "Democratic leaders," all to no effect. That the bankruptcy bill passed (I think we all knew it would) is bad enough, but that so many Democrats ended up voting for it is just a slap in the face.
So after weeks of being polite, I finally feel like I've had enough. I fired off this angry missive to our "leader" Harry Reid. You can too! -- just go here:
http://reid.senate.gov/email_form.cfm and let him know how displeased you are with his vote.
(If you write, express your outrage but try to be polite... ranting, threatening letters may make you feel better but they won't help us get through to these folks.)
This is what I wrote:
Dear Senator Reid,
I still cannot believe my eyes when I look at the Senate roll call for the recent bankruptcy bill, and see a big fat "Yea" next to your name.
This is the congressional leader of the Democratic party, voting in favor of a blatantly unfair bill that hurts hard-working Americans and protects big banking and credit card companies?
Surely you must know that the effects of this so-called "reform" are going to be felt by families who have been forced to declare bankruptcy because of soaring medical bills and insufficient health insurance? For it is people like these who make up an estimated 50% of the personal bankruptcies in America today.
Then I saw that your state is one of 5 in the country that allow asset protection trusts -- legal fictions that enable the wealthy to hide their assets when they declare bankruptcy. Of course, these trusts are not affected by this so-called "bankruptcy reform." Neither, for that matter, are people who interfere with the civil rights of American women by blocking entrances to abortion clinics, and then use bankruptcy to avoid paying legal fees.
And I began to wonder, exactly who does Senator Harry Reid speak for in the Senate?
So my question for you, Senator Reid, is this: How can we rank-and-file Democrats possibly maintain any faith that our party is serious about protecting the rights of ordinary, hard-working Americans, when its highest-ranking Senator won't even stand up to protect them from blatantly flawed legislation like this?
You're supposed to be doing the People's business, not helping business thrive off of the financial misfortunes of the American people. You, and your 23 "Democrat in name only" colleagues in the Senate, should be ashamed of yourself.
Yours sincerely,
xxxxxxx
