While we're on the Peterson subject - press coverage and race
So, had the Petersons been an African American family... would there have been the same coverage of this case. Because, really, this wasn't that big of a news story, it just took off at some point and didn't stop.

So, was it a big deal because the Petersons were a "normal" American, white family?

Or, if it were a black family would it have gotten more play because we all know how the US media likes to villify black people.

1. It wouldn't have been as big
a story if the Petersens had been black. Remember the story began as a missing persons case. A pregnant white woman was missing and they were chasing down leads. Stories about missing black people just don't get as much attention, I'm afraid.

2. The MSM will talk openly about this. It seems that Lacy touched our
hearts with her smile and then her murder had the viewer numbers necessary to make it an ongoing story. It is very, very strange though. Perhaps it has to do with viewership of CNN. Or viewership of MSM.

I don't know - I am from Canada.

3. murder is the number one cause of death of pregnant women.
I did not know this before this trial, and I'm sure I am not alone in that.

I honestly think that people know this now.

If you are looking for a reason why this trial got a lot of publicity, well....Laci Peterson had alot of big white teeth.

If you don't think that is significant, look at all the celebrities, they all have big white teeth and shiny hair. Laci became a celebrity because she had the physical requirements that people look for in a mate now.

Even the ancients knew this, that's why when they came up with the p.r. campaign that is Jesus, they made him a hottie. It never fails.

4. Yeah but the question remains.. I mean a three day story is about
Edited on Thu Mar-17-05 02:43 AM by applegrove
whomever was involved. A two week story... same thing. But one of these 2 year suckers... how come they are all white. I mean we all know that a very, very, pretty long haired woman can make a year long story out of hiccup...if she strikes the public's fancy (Fawn Hall). So you have to be somehow attractive to make it. But that still does not explain why it is only whites who get picked up on (as victims).

And it reminds me of this documentary I saw on TV and there was this African American woman who was like 55. And she was absolutely stunning. And she was in Africa traveling and looking at history and she said:"you know .. I had never heard how pretty I was... I look around here and I see all sorts of people and all sorts of people who are considered gorgeous and they are all types ... and I never heard that or knew that about myself until I came here".

And it is not just the AA who do not make the TV in long term stories. It is Latinos & Asian Americans too. Weird.

And then you hear that some black actors have it in their movie contracts that they will only work with black women love interests because if they did not have it in writing then the love interest would always be a Latino woman.

And you know it has something to do with the feminine icon.

5. Laci Rocha Peterson Was a Latina
So there goes that theory.

It happened during Christmas, a silly season (little hard news). The Petersons were an attractive married couple, and she was pregnant, providing a lead the wrote itself. Her parents made a lot of fuss and hired a media consultant. What kept it from being a seven day wonder was a)her parents and b)husband was having an affair c)husband suspected of offing preggo wife (even worse, offing what would have been his first! born! SON!!). Silly season + media savvy family (or consultant hired by family) + sexy angle = all Laci, all the time.
