every once in a while http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=219many of the front-line comments are very disturbing and disheartening looks like the RW is really winning in its goal to destroy public education

but people cannot see that. They don't read between the lines. Homeschooling for those who cannot afford it and private/parochial for the rich (no vouchers will cover those costs completly).

2. My problem with homeshooling is that it removes |
|
the social aspect of school. IMHO, that is 50% of education. If you can't interact with others, you can never be effective, no matter how good your ideas are. I've only met one person homeschooled and she was quite shy and frankly not that bright. I'm not sure it's such a great idea.

You will NEVER convice me that somebody with barely a High School Education, just because they gave BIRTH, is a better teacher than somebody with a MASTERS DEGREE. Sorry, never.

4. I believe that the availability of public education |
|
is important but I chose a private Montessori for my child-- after a very bad experience with a first grade teacher.
In my area, the public system and most church-sponsored schools were geared towards children that are primarily auditory learners. The Montessori was the only option that actually offered a method of instruction that was based on the natural learning style of the child.
There are many problems with our public school systems. Rather than blindly defending the status quo, I believe that Democrats need to offer proposals that will actually improve the quality of public education.
We need to take a good hard look at why private schools are able to offer a higher quality education for less than it costs a public school to offer a mediocre one and then address these issues.
In the mean time we each have to do what we feel is best for our own children.
