Just sent $25 to John Kerry (too late for ANWR, but Kerry is up to more) |
|
I wanted to send him a contribution in real time when he sent out the "save ANWR" email, but I did not have the funds to do it right then.
So I signed the "roll call" (which evidently has nearly a half-million signatories, over 200,000 of them within the initial 24 hours) and waited to send the funds.
Anyway, Kerry is staying active and truly working toward keeping citizens involved in government. I will continue to support him, as well as the DNC, DCCC, DSCC, and local Democrats.
I don't think we should overlook the importance and significance of regular, small contributions to the organizations we want to empower. I even send out money orders for $10 or $15 to organizations like the ACLU, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, MoveON.org and ACT.
I'm not bragging here - nobody even knows me - but I think that seeing other people donate encourages more people to donate. I saw a blog during the election cycle where they had "donation drives" for a particular candidate and people would see others giving and it would set off a reaction of many more people giving. By all means, if any DUers make contributions of any sort, take the time to post them here - you might just encourage a few other people do likewise.

There are a lot of orgs online that I want to send some money to. (Truthout, Media Matters and so forth.) These can go out this week as my taxes came in (Yeah!)
I regularly give to NARAL, Southern Poverty Law Foundation, AIDS Action Committee and, ahm, the DNC (and my state committee.) I did send the Kerry folks a few bucks as I was very glad they were continuing to fight on ANWR. (We also give to a foundation that supports teenagers in the state social services system. This supplies kids with things they need that can't be covered with state funds.)
There will be more. I agree with you. Sending out even small amounts of money to worthy groups is a good thing, even if I will never become a big money person. And it puts my money where my mouth is. (Ah, so to speak.)

3. I got the idea watching the parody "Conservative Eye for the Liberal Guy" |
|
I don't remember the URL but it was a really funny mini-film with the theme of "Queer Eye".
A liberal guy is sick of losing so he calls the conservative eyes to help change him into a Republican. There are different "Conservative Eyes" to handle different departments - a politics guy, a finance gal, a "Christianity guy" and a "lifestyle (guns, NASCAR, etc) guy".
The Financial Conservative Eye goes thru the liberal guys mail and finds something she reads as "ahh-clue??" What is "ahh-clue" she asks. The liberal guy corrects her, "no that's A-C-L-U, that's a non-profit, I send them money".
After I got done laughing, I sent the ACLU some money. And I realized that just mentioning contribution could give someone the bump they need to contribute. Plus knowing that others are contributing to the same causes makes you feel more like you are participating in something and not acting alone.

4. Donations are going to make a big difference in the fight - |
|
I agree that "seeing other people donate encourages more people to donate." Sacrificing part of my salary is nothing compared to what our troops are going through, it's nothing compared to what our children are going to inherit. Donating to the cause is the least I can do.
