I can think of only one off hand. I didn't think much of people doing a hatchet job on Hillary or saying things about Chelsea and I am surprised to see the answers that were given to the question posed by the starter of this thread. Yes, I'm new to DU and haven't read a great variety of posts, so am unfamiliar with the ways of the members. To bring up that horrible tragedy in Laura's life though is a low blow in my opinion. To me, that puts us in the same boat as the Clinton bashers. I don't care to be in that boat. I'd prefer to take the high road and use the facts before us to not have GWB reelected or to force his resignation if possible.

What I think is the right way to debate or have a "fair fight" isn't the way it is done here perhaps but to each their own.

I guess I would say "Is anything sacred?" regarding a politician's family? They didn't run for office and while they rightly could be questioned about things, throwing dirt on them or bringing up hurtful events from so many years ago just makes the person doing it look desperate IMO.

So, yes, I should just ignore such a post but the question itself wasn't a clue to what I would find in the answers. Free speech and free thought is what it's all about so I'll just go on about my business. Living by the 'doing to other's" idea may be old fashioned and perhaps the honor of the Marine Corps doesn't apply here. (And yes, there are Marines who have not been honorable; I speak of the majority.) Once a Marine, always a Marine isn't just a quote; it is something we believe. With that honor comes integrity. Actions speak louder than words; no doubt about that, but words can do a lot of damage as we saw when Bill and Hillary took the brunt of his actions. I remember seeing him at that prayer breakfast when he again asked for forgiveness. The unforgiving out there were laughing, mocking, making crude jokes, acting like animals. They cut him down along with his family. I was sickened that people I called neighbor and friend got on that band wagon; people I'd known to be good hearted and kind were acting like they'd lived lives so exemplary that they had no understanding of compassion.

I don't know what her reasons were for marrying him. She was 33 or so, and old enough to know better. She's a person who likes to read – he doesn't read. She likes to travel and see the world – he hates traveling, so she has to do it alone. He was a drunken, tobacco-chewing ne-er-do-well who traded off daddy's name and was never responsible for anything in his life. I don't understand what was in this marriage for her. She must have had regrets. She obviously never wanted to be, and doesn't like being "First Lady," and takes as much personal time off as possible. She hates the "ranch" and has said she has no plans to retire there, as much as he would like to. I suspect she's an unhappy woman.

I couldn't stand Barbara Bush, couldn't respect anyone who could be married to - as I used to call her husband, for his anti-woman stances - "Barefoot and Pregnant George." Then once he left office, Barbara Bush did an interview (forget with whom) and it came out that she was pro-choice but just didn't want to say anything while her husband was in office. Still don't respect her, but it was interesting to see there was more going on with her/in that marriage than met the eye.
