CIA Got Uranium Mention Cut in Oct. (Sunday Washington Post)
CIA Director George J. Tenet successfully intervened with White House officials to have a reference to Iraq seeking nuclear materials from Niger removed from a presidential speech last October, three months before a less specific reference to the same intelligence appeared in the State of the Union address, according to senior administration officials.

Tenet argued personally to White House officials, including deputy national security adviser Stephen Hadley, that the allegation should not be used because it came from only a single source, according to one senior official. Another senior official with knowledge of the intelligence said the CIA had doubts about the accuracy of the documents underlying the allegation, which months later turned out to be forged.

The new disclosure suggests how eager the White House was to make Iraq's nuclear capabilities a part of its case against Saddam Hussein even in the face of earlier objections by its own CIA director. It also appears to undermine President Bush's forceful effort on Friday to blame the CIA for inclusion of the faulty allegations because the agency ultimately signed off on the State of the Union speech.

109. I don't trust him quite that much.
Thing is, he's just a mouthpiece for certain factions in the CIA. On this issue, he's been a fortuitous mouthpiece. But other times, he's been a propagandist for unseemly activities.

But on this, I concur. Here we see some really, really pissed off CIA people playing real hardball. Breaking this story on Saturday will completely nullify (I hope) the gains Shrubco thought they'd get from Tenet's hari-kari.

The more who fall on their swords, the more the remaining few will make a hash of it.

Superfabulous for that Rovian image, rats being tossed overboard, rats scurrying for cover. And all the while, Bush looks stupid, impotent, incompetent AND not a man. Because a man owns up to what he's done, he doesn't let others bail him out.

And all those donors to his campaign....

And all those Republican congressmen hoping Bush doesn't want to take a picture with them.

Somewhere on these threads a Texan said to his son, "Where I come from, and you, a man doesn't have to be under oath to tell the truth."

Bush is a liar. Bush is a coward. And people who didn't know that are finding out.

And remember - this is how Nixon went down. One sacrificed fall guy after another, until he was the only one left - and then he had to leave, too.

95. Everything points to Dick Cheney's office!
As our dear friend The Magistrate would say: "Good hunting!"

Here is the key paragraph:

Administration sources said White House officials, particularly those in the office of Vice President Cheney, insisted on including Hussein's quest for a nuclear weapon as a prominent part of their public case for war in Iraq. Cheney had made the potential threat of Hussein having a nuclear weapon a central theme of his August 2002 speeches that began the public buildup toward war with Baghdad.

IF Bush was told that this assertion was SO shaky 3 months prior to the SOTU, then it belies his latest statements that he DIDNT know about how weak this story was, and WASNT warned by the CIA .....

He WAS warned: .... 3 months BEFORE the SOTU .....

He lied Friday ..... CONDI lied ...... POWELL lied .....

They lied lied lied lied LIED lied lied ....

They KNEW 3 months prior to the SOTU that the Niger letter was questionable, was warned AGAINST using it, and then USED in 3 months later, .. after which they DENIED that the CIA had warned them .....

Q ? .... I think this is VERY damning ....

You MAY be right ..... but I smell a forest fire, and the wind is a-HOWLIN ......

That's beyond preposterous. The delivery, the place in the speech, those marginalized "mere 16 words" were that which the speech was built around. It was salient, paramount and whatever you want to call it.

Everyone working on that script knew the intimate details of its inclusion. hahahahahahahahaha.

80. The Nation suggests OSP plus Sharon's office
http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20030707&s=dreyfuss

According to current and former US intelligence analysts and government officials, the Pentagon's Office of Special Plans funneled information, unchallenged, from Ahmad Chalabi's Iraqi National Congress (INC) to Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, who in turn passed it on to the White House, suggesting that Iraqis would welcome the American invaders. The Office of Special Plans is led by Abram Shulsky, a hawkish neoconservative ideologue who got his start in politics working alongside Elliott Abrams in Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson's office in the 1970s. It was set up in fall 2001 as a two-man shop, but it burgeoned into an eighteen-member nerve center of the Pentagon's effort to distort intelligence about Iraq's WMDs and terrorist connections. A great deal of the bad information produced by Shulsky's office, which found its way into speeches by Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney and George W. Bush, came from Chalabi's INC. Since the INC itself was sustained by its neocon allies in Washington, including the shadow "Central Command" at the American Enterprise Institute, it stands as perhaps the ultimate example of circular reasoning.

<snip>

According to the former official, also feeding information to the Office of Special Plans was a secret, rump unit established last year in the office of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel. This unit, which paralleled Shulsky's--and which has not previously been reported--prepared intelligence reports on Iraq in English (not Hebrew) and forwarded them to the Office of Special Plans. It was created in Sharon's office, not inside Israel's Mossad intelligence service, because the Mossad--which prides itself on extreme professionalism--had views closer to the CIA's, not the Pentagon's, on Iraq. This secretive unit, and not the Mossad, may well have been the source of the forged documents purporting to show that Iraq tried to purchase yellowcake uranium for weapons from Niger in West Africa, according to the former official.

It had to come from inside the bowels of the govt. I had really hoped for a good long time that Colin Powell would have been the one to have done it. I never agreed with his politics, but I did think he was a good man. He sold his soul to the devil and is just as much of a scumbag as the rest of the Cabal. What a way to end a pretty great career.

29. The Aluminum Tubes - a pattern is developing
David Albright, a physicist with the IAEA Action Team from 1992 – 1997 stated “Many centrifuge experts believe that this design would not work as the basis of a centrifuge plant.” He further stated in a Knight Ridder report of Oct 4, 2002 that he has been told that scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and other U.S. nuclear weapons facilities disagreed with that assessment but have been ordered not to say anything. He quoted one scientist as saying that "the administration can say what it wants and we are expected to remain silent."

CIA analysts also disagreed with this assertion which the Post just pointed to. The tubes needs to be the next investigation. Who insisted the tubes be included in the SOTU and other reports?

32. The aluminum tubes are next!!! look at this snip:
"Officials involved in preparing the speech said there was much more internal debate over the next line of the speech, when Bush said in reference to Hussein, "Our intelligence sources tell us that he has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production."

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, in his Feb. 5 presentation to the United Nations, noted a disagreement about Iraq's intentions for the tubes, which can be used in centrifuges to enrich uranium. The U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency had raised those questions two weeks before the State of the Union address, saying Hussein claimed non-nuclear intentions for the tubes. In March, the IAEA said it found Hussein's claim credible, and could all but rule out the use of the tubes in a nuclear program."

thank you.

I spent a year in the late 90's doing IT stuff for a government subcontractor. Had absolutely no idea what the company did, but it was run by high up ex-CIA guys. I made a few 'peon" friends (great political conversations over lunch) and we talked of the CIA mindset and such. They left me with this thought - do not EVER lay false blame on the CIA. They remember, and they get even.

The only question left is: above or below the fold? :silly:

The Sunday Presstitutes oughta be verrry interesting this time. How will they avoid holding their noses in the midst of such a stench as this?

Tenet must be 'wired in' to either Powell or Rice, one of whom (inadvertently?) set up the Boy King. Think about it. Mickey Mouth is in Africa away from his two heavy handlers, Obermeister Cheney and Reichsfuhrer Rumsfeld. Either Powell or Rice had to feed the Mouth his 'script' about the CIA's (purported) failure to keep the SOTU just barely short of being ridiculously fraudulent. The Mouth siezed on the arrogance of blaming Tenet and (kiss of death, no mistake) having "100% confidence in him." (That's DC's way of saying "so long, sucker!") Having a consciousness of such events even more ephemeral than a fart in a stiff breeze, the Mouth was typically brain-faded about October's deletion of the same bald lie.

His Chimperial Lowness swaggered right into this Tarbaby.

Lovely. All we need are feathers and a rail.

I noticed that the WP story sourced "senior administration offiicials'".

This means the source is not reallly the CIA, but probably someone inside the White House or OSD.

So the idea that Poweell or Condi or their staff is behind the leaks is probably a good guess.

and why the eternal (on DU in general) desire to find in Powell some redeeming action? Let's see: he was in charge of the cover up at Mi Lai, he joined this administration before it was even elected and has done their bidding ever since. He's up to his neck in this.

As for Rice, she's a true believer as well---schooled in cold war languages and politics, mentored by those still seeking global domination to stop the "red menace"

What exactly have either of these two people done that elicits the suggestion that they want to take their cushy little world down? There is some sort of projecting that goes on here that seeks to forever find secret desires among Rice and Powell to overthrow Bush.

Sorry, I don't buy this at all.

Edited on Sun Jul-13-03 09:52 AM by TahitiNut
I'm far less interested in picking "evil-doers" and "good guys" than I am in viewing the behavior, issues, and the dynamics of a corrupt madministration. I don't see Mickey Mouth being in control; he's handled, pure and simple(ton). The question, then, is who "(mis)handled" him in Africa when he went for the Tarbaby. Clearly, Condi was the primary puppeteer. It seems, however, that somebody was able to offer a prescripted remark the Mouth couldn't resist. For that, I nominate Powell -- mostly speculatively. Condi has not shown any propensity for integrity or candor. Powell has consistently shown, most notably in his UN speech, some degree of reticence to engage in outright lying. It's possible, of course, that Tenet conned Condi and she cluelessly bit on a convenient swagger. I'm just more doubtful.

Note: I'm watching bobble-head (she's got a "tell" when the lies get too thick) Condi on Face the Nation right now. Interestingly, Powell's not being trotted out for Sunday morning. (There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday moring?) Rummy's on Steph's ABC circlejerk. Bob Schieffer seems to have a stiffened spine. They're double-teaming her (with Doyle McManus of the LA Times). There's no question in my feeble mind that the madministration knows they've been had -- one finger of their many greedy hands in the cookie jar.

No CIA director could have written that letter without knowing what he was doing, but all those posts seem to have vanished so I'll say it again.

Tenet wrote the most damning "exculpatory" letter for the Shrump possible. He basically did nothing but confirm what the accusers have been saying. And they had no choice but to run with it and hope nobody read beyond the headline. But now they're fucked. Aren't they fucked? I'm pretty sure this article means that, one way or another, now or in 2004, in the court of public opinion or some other court THEY ARE FUCKED.

Oh yeah, that'll stand up.

Condi blamed Tenet to the press on AF 1. Then she called Tenet to tell him he'd better back her play or else. So he did, in classic CIA fashion. And did they know what he'd done, when they read it? I'm sure Karl did. But they had no choice but to go with it. Right over the FUCKING CLIFF!!!!!

Tenet knew what he was doing, I'm convinced of it. It almost makes me like the guy.

Phew. I do NOT want to let my emotions run away with me here. I'm sure they have a play. They always have a play. But I don't see how they can get off this one. And with every single report of another attack on our guys in Iraq this hook is going to dig deeper into the flabby meat of this criminal administration. Deeper and deeper. Even if it doesn't come to impeachment, they are sorely wounded.

72. DrBB......FYI.......I hear ya.....
Your message has been received loud and clear.

I agree totally......

Tenet did nothing more than stand like a man because as head of the CIA, it WAS his responsibility to raise a ruckus about the Niger reference. So whether he didn't see the final speech OR whether he was told to back off and let it run.....it was still his responsibility, as CIA director to say something. But when you are working for an emperor who wears no clothes.....what can a guy do?

Man, I keep reading this thread over and over because it just really floats my previously sinking boat.

Oh, the beauty of having a story like this out in the open is truly amazing. The whores pick it up......and Bush is sunk. The whores don't pick it up, Bush is sunk and so are the whores. I guess I am going for the 2-for-1 deal.

82. Analysis from Ruppert on "CIA mouthpiece" Pincus
http://www.fromthewilderness.com/free/ww3/070103_beyond_bush_1.html

Of all of these stories, it is the June 22 front-page Washington Post story by Walter Pincus that tells me that Bush is cooked. Pincus is a CIA mouthpiece who wrote a 1967 column titled, "How I traveled the world on a CIA stipend." He was the major damage control spokesman when Pulitzer Prize winner Gary Webb's 1996 stories blew the lid off of CIA connections to Contra-connected cocaine being smuggled into Los Angeles. If any journalist is a weathervane for the tides of political fortune in a scandal like this it is Pincus. His role, though likely to be shared with other press organizations, will be the same as Woodward and Bernstein's in Watergate.

And anyone who has not read his long article predicting this MUST.

But Pincus is a major player, whereas Woodward -- though a CIA spear carrier -- was just a junior guy at the time. Woodward and Bernstein had to labor long and hard before Watergate really picked up traction. Pincus's words reverberate loudly. I really think the establishment doesn't just want the neocons and * taken down, but it wants them taken down NOW.

101. And this is all the warm-up:
The main event occurs when the 9/11 investigation goes public.

My guess is the administration fought hard to remove blame from themselves and shift it to the CIA. Keep the damning parts secret and then publicly blame it on faulty intelligence.

Warned in advance that shrubya was going to try this, the intelligence community decided they had to strike first.

They are just greasing the wheels now.

Bush knew, we knew he knew, and very soon, the rest of the world will as well.

102. Bob Boudelang knew!
Edited on Sun Jul-13-03 01:24 AM by LoZoccolo
Now I'm really surprised that flew over everyone's radar. Bob Boudelang, in his 3/14/2003 column:

"Do they not know Sodom must be stopped from getting nuculear weapons, even if the evidence that he has them is fake? Do they not know that Sodom has aluminum tubes? Do they not know Sodom has little vials? Do they not know Sodom has a drone made out of balsa wood and duct tape?"

This could possibly be the most damaging evidence yet!

Now if you don't believe me here it is right here! I did not make this quote up so stop saying that!

113. It's a Lazarus story -- it will rise again from the dead. Don't worry!
Bigger boys are going to bring down the shrub. He's gotten too dangerous to too many people. And he'll be showing himself to be even more dangerous in the upcoming months.

They're going to show chimpy showing his ass before long...in a really public way. Up til now, they've been covering for him, but they're about to take the rose-colored lenses off the TV cameras.

114. I pray you're right, Sue...
Rummy did a lousy job on Meet the Whore this am (came across as all squeaky and squinty), and I'll bet Condi doesn't fare much better on CNN's Late Ed...

They've slithered off the hook on so much for so long. I want this to stick to them like glue!
