I haven't had my drink shoot up and out my nose from a sudden burst of laughter since maybe junior high school! It wasn't all that pleasant, but the laughing part was great.
Thanks - I needed that! Just gotta clean my monitor now...

They have seen the light.
Their god finished building Terri's mansion 15 years ago and he is getting tired of evicting the dust bunnies. They can pray all they want, but the answer from him is NO.

I have never met anyone remotely like these folks. That lady who is having some kind of quasi-spiritual moment looks so deluded. Is she conscious of the fact that she is faking her moment with god? I think it probably so drilled into her head that she should do stuff like that, that she believes it is real!
Silly Freeper, Brains are for us.
Maybe the reason they are all protesting is because they feel like they, having a similar amount of greymatter as Ms Schiavo, are feeling discriminated against?

27. I was at one of those dinners ONCE |
|
Years ago at a stockholders meeting of a small bank where we were to have dinner, I was introduced to fundamentalism (guess that's what it was) when before dinner we had a prayer and I swear I peaked at the man praying and he looked like he was having an organism. I had already had a couple of drinks and it was all I could do to keep from laughing. Our little group could barely wait to escape this bunch. It gave us something to talk about for weeks.

We were going to invest in the bank but knew there were some unusual dealing going on and knew these were not religious people, at least they didn't act like serious christians. The guy praying, who was a board member, had tears in his eyes, now that's spookie.

Her praying does not disturb me at all... I have seen this kind of faith before, when I was growing up.
It is not common for Americans to see it in the United States OUTSIDE a church... and it should not disturb you, her faith that is.
What is disturbing is what they want to do with this country... all that talk about this being a Christian Nation should disturb you... not a woman praying.
Sorry for the rant.

When I feel like mocking a member of the religious right (who have as a group upset me quite a bit lately) I ask myself, "Would you make fun of them if they were Muslims or participants in an African tribal ritual?"
The answer is no, because I think it's important to be tolerant, no matter how whacky such religious behavior might seem to me. (and as a secular humanist... it all seems a little whacky)

These are exactly the folks Nathanael West described in his classic "Hollywood" novel:
"They were savage and bitter, especially the middle-aged and the old...Their boredom becomes more and more terrible. They realize they've been tricked and burn with resentment...Nothing can ever be violent enough to make taut their slack minds and bodies."
Describing a healing service by the female evangelist (based on Aimee Semple McPherson), he wrote about them "writhing on their hard wooden benches." And he knew "they had within themselves the power to destroy civilization." (That's from memory, but close.)

33. actually its more a question of why she is praying. |
|
or what she is praying for that disturbs me. If this was in opposition to the war in Iraq, or the destruction of our environment, I'd be far more supportive. If she is caught up in a right to life fervor - with all the characteristics of magic based, irrational , good intentions, its an other matter. But then I am not religious.
I respect one's freedom to worship what ever religion one chooses, but when it spills over into a conflict with the rule of law or intrudes into one's private life I look in askance at the imposition of morality. Indeed the talk about this being a Christian Nation is worrisome. Ever read The Handmaid's Tale ?
