Terri Schiavo is a helpless idividual caught in the middle of an ideological firestorm. Fallwell is a shameless profiteering, media-whoring false-prophet for whom I have little to no pity.

I'm frankly stunned that people are asking for prayers and well-wishes for him. I'm appalled, really. "Be better than the Freepers"? Well, I don't determine my point of view based upon freepers, thanks. Falwell is an insult to everything I think and believe and hold dear, and the world will be a measurably better place without him in it, in my view.

I think the reaction of DUers is interesting. A lot of it is ugly, and I expected that. I'm not an admirer of his, but I don't wish him ill.

However, Falwell's condition is not going to be used by demagogues to undermine the rule of law, like Mrs. Schiavo's condition has been. That is what made the Schiavo case worth talking about.

Rev. Falwell, if we can take his word seriously, has a living will expressing that extraordinary means be used to keep him alive. Consequently, no one has any cause to raise a fuss if they don't remove any feeding tube once he's brain dead (I mean, in the literal, medical sense, of course).

Falwell, unlike Mrs. Schiavo, is a public figure and we are reacting to him in that capacity. However one feels about him or his present condition, his illness raises no crucial political issues.

21. What you wrote expresses my opinion too.

The Schiavo case and the actions it set in motion have multiple major implications. The situation with Falwell is different.

I do think, as has been said by me and by others, that DU would benefit from having a "Current Hot Topic" forum, with a changing title set for whatever is the major center of attention du jour. If the Schiavo threads could have been posted there, for example, there would have been less duplication, people following the story closely would have found everything in one place, and the rest of the important news wouldn't have been pushed off into oblivion. There will be a thread posted today or tomorrow proposing this for general discussion and I hope people weigh in with constructive criticism of the idea.

or tied it in a knot LONG ago. I wouldn't, however, equate the two cases. I know nothing of Mrs. Shiavo. She has never told me to go out and force myself to live a lifestyle I can't cope with. She never blamed me for Columbine and September 11th. No, Falwell is a different situation altogether. I could write a literal book sized post on all the ways his hate speech has had a negative impact on my life, both physically and mentally. I've already done it on other threads. I will say this. The man never LET UP with the gay scapegoating. I've tried get a dialogue started about him before, but until he hit the ICU, not much was said. Now, he's news. My gloves are off. Payback's a bitch.
