Just saw "Left of the Dial"
on HBO....about Air America's startup days....

in short...Randi Rhodes is the star of the network in my opinion....I'm madly in love with her.....

It was an entertaining and troubling documentary about those first troubled months but it was a miracle they pulled it out.

Happy Birthday Air America Radio.....!!!

Keep plugging away...

9. Yeah, it was
I so certain we were going to have a new President! People were calling me, and I kept telling them, "Don't worry, we don't need Florida. Kerry has PA, we just need Ohio."

Was the audio as bad for others as it was for me? I mean, it was out of synch with the video in the early portion . . .

6. Randi Rhodes...
Does enjoy the ratings success no doubt. But I like Mike Malloy better myself. I have listened to him on the previous network before they went bankrupt. I also like Jeanene Garafalo and I find her entertaining. I think it goes a bit far to say that Randy is THE star....

25. Did you hear Randi's interview with the Strobny's tonight?
I think that is how it is spelled. They were the knights in shining armor. She said when she saw them outside the door, she knew they would give the money to save them. The wife was on also. They must be good friends.

How the heck is that Cohen guy not charged with something?

I love Randi. The HBO special was great.

It was really good, and wouldn't have been possible if they hadn't allowed a camera to follow them all around, and interview them, even when it seemed everything was falling apart.

Catch it if you can.

15. I think they may have been showing them speak but you were hearing the
radio vocals on delay. That's why it looked like a spaghetti western. It only was out of sinc in the on-air footage.

17. Sorry, but...one thumb up
The audio sync problems almost rendered some potions of the documentary unwatchable. What were the editors thinking?

Also, a lot of LOTD played like a downer. I can't fault the filmmakers for wanting to catch AAR at its lowest point, but the overall mood of the film was disheartening. That little graphic showing 48 AAR towers across America looks like it was added as an afterthought.

Some good stuff, nevertheless - it was great seeing Randi rip into Ralph Nader - but overall, I found LOTD disappointing.

18. What I Got Out of It Was...
These people are working for a passion, not for money. Unlike Hannity, O'Reilly, Elder, et al., there's no big money corporate pay off at the end. They're working for their passions and living paycheck to paycheck. They really, really do care about the issues and what they're doing.

Air America will always struggle because they'll never have the big money corporations behind them. They're at a distinct disadvantage in that regard. However, I believe that they can and will stay in business.

47. HBO and the producers must have been convinced that AAR --
-- would survive. It is fortuituous that we have this HBO record of this network's struggles during those first few months. I participate in discussions at a radio site <http://www.pdxradio.com> and there was a good deal of talk about the network's financial problems last spring after they signed on.

But if your computer still doesn't get audio, check eBay for slightly used models - I snatched up a P2 266MHz for only $70, complete with audio, USB, and such.

Check AAR's station list, too. Maybe they're broadcasting in your neck of the woods now...

40. I saw it via DISHTV. No sync problems. Thought it captured the
spirit perfectly...starting with the chaos, then the panic, the excitement, the "opening night" jitters, the disappointment with the $$ problems, the determination of everyone to make it work. The joy when the ratings came out. The sorrow and depression after the election.
I liked that it was done in a sort of cinema verite format because it added to the sense of "being there".
The best part was knowing that it all sort of has a happy ending.
It was great how it showed the same scenes at the end as at the befinning, but instead of the stupid conservative talk radio voices we were now hearing the AirAmericaRadio voices talking over them.
It was definitely worth seeing.
