Call to Action: Call out Bush, Delay & Co. on their "Culture of Life"
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 09:22 AM by PA Democrat
The plan is to launch a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and directly quote Bush, Delay, Santorum, or the hypocrite of your choice. Then ask if based upon those sentiments they will be changing their policies. Cite budget proposals, policies, bills, etc, they authored or supported that do NOT support a "culture of life" or "err on the side of life".

Here are some of my suggestions on issues:

pre-emptive war based upon cooked intelligence does not "err on the side of life"

cuts to Medicaid do not "protect the weak"

cuts to funding for housing for the disabled and mentally ill do not "build a culture of life, where all Americans are valued, welcomed, and protected - and that culture of life must extend to individuals with disabilities"

Republican House's version of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is a direct contradiction of Bush's statement that "those who live at the mercy of others deserve our special care and concern"

judicial nominees (William Pryor & D. Brooks Smith) who have vigorously sought to limit the rights of the disabled does not "protect the weak"

Please add your suggestions.

1. For Bush, there is the law in Texas
that allows hospitals to decide to pull the plug. If the family members disagree, they have ten days to find another facility to care for their loved one. This went into effect when dubya was governor. Not too long ago, the plug was pulled on an infant, after the mother attempted to fight it in court.

3. Conservatives (sensenbrenner) are proposing
legislation which would prohibit medical professionals from disconnecting patients from life support. However, there is no provision for funding in the legislation so far. I would suggest if congress is going to institute such a ban, that the patient instantly becomes a ward of the Feds and that all costs relative to that patient be borne by the federal government. Lets see if the godly republicans can spin that. Their politization of this issue is incredibly transparent; but they know their base.

4. A few sources to quote:
"The case of Terri Schiavo raises complex issues. Yet in instances like this one, where there are serious questions and substantial doubts, our society, our laws, and our courts should have a presumption in favor of life. Those who live at the mercy of others deserve our special care and concern. It should be our goal as a nation to build a culture of life, where all Americans are valued, welcomed, and protected - and that culture of life must extend to individuals with disabilities." -Bush

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/03/20050317-7.html

"Today millions of Americans are saddened by the death of Terri Schiavo. Laura and I extend our condolences to Terri Schiavo's families. I appreciate the example of grace and dignity they have displayed at a difficult time. I urge all those who honor Terri Schiavo to continue to work to build a culture of life, where all Americans are welcomed and valued and protected, especially those who live at the mercy of others. The essence of civilization is that the strong have a duty to protect the weak. In cases where there are serious doubts and questions, the presumption should be in the favor of life." -Bush

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/03/20050331.html

MR. McCLELLAN: First of all, this is a day of sadness, and the President expressed his condolences to the parents of Terri Schiavo and to all those who supported her and prayed for her during the past few weeks. This has been a difficult period.

The President viewed this case as an extraordinary one. There were extraordinary circumstances involved in this case. But the President has also made it very clear that he believes our nation should build a culture of life, that we should be working together to build a culture of life in America, and that means protecting life at all stages, particularly those who are at the mercy of others, like Terri Schiavo.

MR. McCLELLAN: The President is always going to stand on the side of defending life. He's made that very clear through his words, as well as through his action. We have taken important steps, through legislation, to promote a culture of life in America. But, ultimately, the President believes that we have to change our culture and we have to change hearts. And that's something that will require continued diligence on behalf of all Americans who want to build a culture of life. There are many ways we can work together to promote a culture of life in America.

Now, in terms of this specific situation, I think you've heard the President's views on it. We would have preferred a different decision from the courts. That's why the President supported the legislation that was passed by Congress, and he is saddened by this situation, and he is saddened on this day.

5. I think we should also call upon our elected representatives
to speak out on this hypocrisy.

Your list is very inclusive. Here are a few other lines of thought:

Environmental laws: 1 in 4 women now have enough mercury in their bodies to cause birth defects, yet bush's Clear Skies Initiative allows for a 420% INCREASE in the amount of mercury released into our air, compared to the Clean Air Act;

Higher abortion and STD rates in the US from changes and inaccuracies in Sex Ed curriculums brought on during this Administration.

Great plan!

8. Great suggestion.
Send your letter to BOTH your local newspaper and your representatives. Also, we want to get the Democratic leadership to start vocally calling out these stinking hypocrites on every single policy that they push that contradicts their rhetoric.

7. Great suggestions !
If we all choose some aspect of the Republican party's utter hypocrisy on their "culture of life" and write a letter to the editor to illustrate that point, it would be a beautiful thing, don't you think?

In my experience, the average Joe is not aware of the complete disconnect between these hypocrite's rhetoric and their actions. We need to point it out, since the MSM isn't.

10. Delay should be questioned at every opportunity
about his and his family's decision to withhold life support for his father. IIRC, his father was in a coma for less than a week when Delay and family made that decision.

11. Question
without trying to take this off topic.

How can we also tie this into recent proposed legislation allowing doctors to refuse treatment based on their personal moral/religious positions? (The one about refusing to treat gays)
