I am stunned...The AZ Republic 's Opinion
The AZ Republic is not typically the most liberal paper in the west (understatement). However, I have to give them credit on this opinion piece. Good for them!! Emphasis are mine.

....

His decision to remove the feeding tube that kept Terri alive was reviewed by more than a dozen judges in numerous courts in a process that demonstrated thoroughness and respect for human dignity.

The politics demonstrated something less noble.

In leading a congressional effort to thwart Michael Schiavo's effort to follow his wife's wishes, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay contradicted both the Republican commitment to states' rights and his own personal history.

...snip

Of course, in Terri Schiavo's case, the family decision was not unanimous. Her parents insisted she was not as far gone as doctors said. Yet what they saw in her face was meticulously explained by medical experts as reflexive, not reactive. Her parents didn't want to let go. But when the facts were reviewed in court, they lost. Time and again.

....snip

It may be hard for them to accept that her death Thursday also brings sorrow to her husband and those who supported his efforts to let her die.

2. There is a price to pay for the Republicans
The hard core religious conservatives are going to be pissed that they didn't save Terri. The moderate and libertarian conservatives are going to be pissed that they wasted so much time on this.

4. It's hard to believe these days, but there was a time
when the word conservative wasn't synonymous with stupid. Back when people allowed the medical professionals to do their job, so many opinions and facts presented about Terri's brain activity or lack of it, and bolstered by the many judges who agreed would have been considered acceptable by conservatives as well as liberals, including the Catholic Church, which has in the past allowed hospice much more frequently than not. This whole issue was dirty politics who saw an opportunity with a dysfunctional family's private problem.

Apparently, there are only a few of these rare and endangered conservatives left anymore.

5. Yugg. I used to live in Mesa, and took the Republic...
...that paper was so slanted that they only delivered it to your house if you lived in the right side of the street.

Don't worry, they will have two full pages of right wing hatred and vitriol from letter writers dedicated just to tearing the editorial apart in this Sunday's paper. That's what they do there.
