School corporal punishment news
The Dallas Texas school board is about to vote on whether to continue to allow corporal punishment in its schools, and the Pennsylvania state board of education has voted in March to recommend a ban on corporal punishment in public schools.

It is quite appalling to me that corporal punishment is still
legal in schools in slightly under half of the fifty states.

The recent vote in Pennsylvania noted "students who misbehave may not be "spanked, paddled or hit" with the intent "to cause pain." You can

1. Parent pulls child from school rather than paddling at home.
A month or so ago I read a story about a private school that instructed a parent to spank a child at home because he/she had acted up when counting cheerios. Anyone remember that/have a link?

7. No link but I remember it was in Schaumburg Illinois.
That might help you track it down.

Child Suspended After Mom Wouldn't Spank
VIDEO: Chelsea Irving reports.
Mar 6, 2005 5:27 pm US/Central

It's an ongoing dilemma for many parents, whether or not to spank your child. But now a suburban mother says her decision not to use corporal punishment is the reason her son got suspended from school. CBS 2's Chelsea Irving spoke to the mom about that difficult choice. 6-year-old Chandler Fallaw is being home schooled these days, after his mother pulled him from his private Christian school last Wednesday. "I'm sad," Chandler said.

Michelle Fallaw-Gabrielson says after Chandler had repeated problems with talking in class, officials at Schaumburg Christian School gave her a choice, either spank Chandler or he'd be suspended for a day.
“My eyes filled up with tears and I said, ‘Suspend him,’” said Fallaw-Gabrielson. “I said you know my view on spanking and I'm not going to spank him." "We don't believe corporal punishment is overboard," said Randy Thaxton, administrator for the Schaumburg Christian School. He says parents are never forced to spank kids, but if bad behavior escalates they may be given a choice between suspension or spanking.

"It's an opportunity for them to make progress in the behavior of their child in a Bible-based situation. In other words, the Bible supports what we are asking the parents to do there." School officials say the parents of every child are given a handbook, which explains the use of corporal punishment, and at least one parent needs to sign that they agree with the school’s policies. The statement of cooperation explicitly states parent-administered corporal punishment is an option.

Chandler's mom says she signed the letter last year but not this year. And she's now decided Chandler won't be returning to Schaumburg Christian School. "I don't feel the school has a right to force an ultimatum in corporal punishment," said Fallaw-Gabrielson. Corporal punishment has been banned in Illinois public schools for more than a decade. Schaumburg Christian is a private school. Officials there say they have no plans to reconsider their policy on spanking. As for Chandler, his family is moving to Aurora in a few weeks and his mother plans to enroll him in a public school there.

2. NJ outlawed corporal punishment in 1876
and for years it was the only state that prohibited paddling schoolchildren.

What on earth is the matter with these other states that still permit it? Are these people all barbarians?

3. Given that it was Texas
they ought to be glad it's not legal to shoot them.

6. Evidently, Gawd wants rebellious children to be Stoned to Death.
At least that is what the Old Testament says.

There is a direct relationship between fundamentalism and the number of crimes that sane folks would consider child abuse.

8. The intent to cause pain?
The recent vote in Pennsylvania noted "students who misbehave may not be "spanked, paddled or hit" with the intent "to cause pain."

Well, what if the intent is to correct misbehavior? And causing pain is only incidental. Seem like a real stupid way to word the bill, IMO.
