Where were you when you heard the news today?
At my bar review class I checked CNN.com on my cell phone three times; I read about his high fever, but not anything else. My friend and I got out of the class at 3:25 and went to our lockers in the student lounge, and some students were watching TV, which was showing St. Peter's Basilica. I asked a guy if the Pope was still hanging on, and he shook his head. Another student told me he'd died about half an hour earlier (she meant almost an hour, but that's okay).

I want to express my condolences to our Catholic DUers who are mourning today. I, too, am mourning, although I am Muslim. I am very sad at the loss of this man of peace, whom we need in these dark days more than ever. My heart is breaking today. God rest his very great soul.

7. Right. However, I hate looking into bedrooms where the bed is not made.
I'm kind of a neat freak. Probably borderline OCD, who knows?

22. On DU with the TV on in my living room.
When I heard the news. This isn't jarring unexpected news so I don't think most people are going to remember where they when they heard the Pope died.

6. Switching between channels and surfing the net from the couch
As much as I have a serious axe to grind with the Catholic Church, John Paul II was a servant of God with an almost incomprehensible burden on his shoulders, and he served with humility and unwavering faith.

9. Talking on the phone
wishing my son a happy birthday. Heard it in the background on the TV.

Hmmmmmmm. My son's birthday is on the same day the Pope died. I'm sure someone will find something symbolic in that.

14. I was at the Norfolk Gun Show
no shit. I felt dirty when I got home, especially after I heard the news.

I spent the afternoon looking at weapons of violence and symbols of hate (swastika, southern curios), while a man of peace was dying.

16. Thank you DTBK for your lovely and thoughtful post.
Pope John Paul II was a man of peace and I have no doubts that he was welcomed into the Kingdom of God along with all the other truly holy people throughout the ages.

Again, thank you...

17. Sitting on my patio drinking coffee with the radio on when suddenly... my
Corinthian bell chimes started being buffetted by the wind...
when I hear on the radio, "the Pope has died." Having my bell chimes
ring just at the moment of the announcement gave me chills from my head
to toes. Then I wept.

19. Home
I knew his time was near when I heard the Pope asked for the last of the Stations of the Cross to be read to him. I knew he was aware his time was over. I felt within the next few hours he would not be here anymore.
