John Kerry for Pope?
I heard the Pope does not have to be a cardinal, or even ordained. Any adult Catholic male is eligible.

So that's something we can hope for. Sure the odds are about as likely as * actually telling the truth and being a competant leader, but it is possible!

4. More appropriately...
a married Catholic who had his first marriage annulled after divorcing. Which enabled him to marry Teresa in the church.

17. Yes, he was. I had read of it long before the election.
But there is a link below and a snip from the article.

<snip>

Heinz was a devout Catholic and felt uncomfortable marrying Kerry without church approval. In 1995, Kerry applied for an annulment for his first marriage. It was granted, which allows the couple to receive Communion. Both Kerry and his former wife have said they will not publicly disclose the reason for the annulment.

23. Thanks for the info & link
Catholic annulments have always bothered me a great deal...you can't get divorced, but you can pretend a marriage that lasted for years & included children didn't really exist.

Hypocrisy at its' finest.

6. Technically, John Kerry qualifies
Any Catholic man in good standing w. the Church is eligible to become a Pope.
Kerry's in good standing since he got his first marriage anulled, and he did marry Teresa in Catholic ceremony, didn't he?
Never happened before though. It's cardinals who get elected.

12. Possible, but not probable
Since 1059, the cardinals have had the sole responsibility for choosing the pope. Although these "princes of the church" are free to elect any baptized Catholic male, the last time a non-cardinal was elevated to the papacy was 1378.

16. Umm. That's not going to happen.
The Bishops wouldn't go for that. Besides, I don't think Kerry would even take the job if chosen.

19. You are incorrect. The pope must be ordained.
By virtue of his office, the pope is the bishop of Rome. To be consecrated a bishop, a man must be an ordained priest.
