Bill Hicks Documentary on Trio Network
There is a great documentary showing on Trio Network right now. It's called Bill Hicks Outlaw Comedian or something like that. I've never seen it and it's great. I know that Trio Network is somewhat obscure but check your cable listings to see if you get it. Heck I never knew there was a Trio Network until I tonight!

I highly recommend it if you've never seen Bill Hicks or are a fan of his. He was one of the greatest counter-culture comedians of our time. Our own Janeane Garrafolo is the narrator.

1. Bill Hicks was awesome

Check this out:

"I'm so sick of arming the world and then sending troops over to destroy the fucking arms, you know what I mean? We keep arming these little countries, then we go and blow the shit out of 'em. We're like the bullies of the world, you know. We're like Jack Palance in the movie Shane ... throwing the pistol at the sheep herder's feet: "Pick it up." "I don't wanna pick it up mister, you'll shoot me." "Pick up the gun." "Mister, I don't want no trouble, huh. I just came down town here to get some hard rock candy for my kids, some gingham for my wife. I don't even know what gingham is, but she goes through about 10 rolls a week of that stuff. I ain't looking for no trouble, mister." "Pick up the gun." Boom, boom. "You all saw him. He had a gun."

And another:

"Dinosaur fossils? God put those there to test our faith." Thank God, I'm strapped in right now here, man. I think God put you here to test my faith, dude. You believe that? "Uh huh." Does that trouble anyone here? The idea that God ... might be ... fuckin' with our heads? I have trouble sleeping with that knowledge. Some prankster God running around: "Hu hu ho. We will see who believes in me now, ha HA."

Really wanted to see the Ernie Kovacs stuff they were showing - and John Cassavettes' early, goofy series...

4. whooops, sorry I missed it, what Hicks would be saying today?..
I bet Bush wouldn't be in office. We really missed something not having him pounding Bush and these theofascists. He said Clinton and Reno should commit hari-kari over WACO but he thought Republican's were a lower life form altogether. Check out "The Elephant is Dead" in the AZ Bay sample link below. LOL

Good die young and all that. Big, big loss. His career was really just getting going...

Here some video -- at the bottom is one of Bill with Kinison ... heh They are loaded....

Here's some samples of three of his CD's if you haven't had the pleasure.

13. I ran into him once, literally, on the street
Edited on Wed Apr-06-05 08:58 AM by wicket
He went to my college in the 1970s and when I was there in the 1990s he was visiting to give a talk. My friends and I were out walking in Boston when I collided with Dennis Leary. I was so caught off guard that I couldn't come up with a comeback. I was kicking myself later on because I wish I had screamed at him for stealing Bill's act. It's like the old joke goes:

"Hey, do you know why Dennis Leary is famous?"

"Why?"

"Because there's no cure for cancer"

Grrrrr....he pisses me off. Bill Hicks had more talent in one pinky than Dennis Leary has in his entire self.

(edited for grammar)

Over at my cousins house at a party I saw a Leary book on the shelf and started frothing, then I opened randomly to a page which was a word for word theft.

14. can you give me more info on this?
did leary conciously try to swipe bill's stuff?

this is the first i have heard of it, i can obviously see similarities, but hicks stuff seems so much smarter than the type of schtick leary does.

Check these links out:

http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=Denis%20Leary

http://www.fadetoblack.com/interviews/billhicks/2.html - this goes into how Bill was annoyed that Leary stole his act.

Of course, Bill did his material much better than Leary did when he ripped him off, he's such an imposter!

8. Thank you for this!
I have to check and see if we get Trio. If not, we sure will by tonight, if that's possible.

I once made a donation to the Bill Hicks Foundation for the preservation of Texas wildlife, and got the most wonderful, handwritten thank-you note from his mother. It brought tears to my eyes. She even wrote in the return address - their home.

Such a lovely gesture. She must miss him so much. I know I do.

By the way, there's a brilliant biography out about Bill, called "American Scream." You'll get a whole new perspective on those two scumbuckets, Denis Leary and Bill Maher. I heartily recommend the book - a great read.
